Im a relatively new ferrari owner (2+ years). Love my f car, have put some time and miles and work in to the car and I have to say there is a gutteral feel of ferrari that I know may not be matched by another car...yet.
Ive always admired porsche, the precision, reliability, driveability etc, and am giving some thought to trading cars.
Id like to start in an "entry" level car. 911, 996 etc. under 100K and perhaps do some modifications as I enjoy the car.
Can those who may have both or changed to porsche from ferrari give me some input?
Cabrio versus hard top? I love convertables, but dont know how they drive for porsche. Obviously Im going to drive several and try to spend some time in a porsche or several of them, before I decide.
Ill take all opinions on starting, cars, models, turbos/twin turbos, 4WD cars etc.
    Thank you!!

no offense, but you are living life in reverse!
my belief is most f-car owners grew up driving p-cars first!
the p-car can be viewed as a poor man's ferrari.
if you want to own a p-car, perhaps as a daily driver, i would not give up your f-car in the process!
    why not keep both????

I don't think so... if you want a reliable car that make sense... I see the Porsche as a jack of all trades... the Ferrari is more like a weekend Hot Rod. You go around, show off and back home... Not that everybody does that but must do, no question about.

A STRANDED CAR ON THE SIDE OF ROAD IN ITALY IS AN INCONVENIENCE... YOU WALK TO A HOUSE, PEOPLE INVITED YOU IN AND OFFER WINE AN FOOD... SAME PROBLEM IN GERMANY... YOU WILL FREEZE TO DEATH... THAT IS WHY THE GERMANS MAKE MORE RELIABLE CARS. TRUE STORY. ;)

Why don't you add a 964 or a 993 or something? Or a properly serviced 996 would give you all of the benefits of a modern 911.

You can't argue with the daily = 911 and weekends = Ferrari argument :)

Ya, get a 996tt for $45k, throw in 5k of mods to get to 520hp, and keep the Ferrari!

+1. $100K is way beyond an entry level Porsche. $25K will get you a nice 996 coupe. $100K will not get you a Porsche that is 4 times better. $50K will get you a Demon-fast 996TT. $100K will not get you any car that is twice as fast.

Keep the Ferrari. Pick up a 993 Carrera, or Turbo if you have the means, and daily drive it.

I went from a Porsche (993) to a Ferrari (328) and back to a Porsche (356 Speedster). I like both marques, but as the cars have modernized (after the 328 era) the differences aren't as big as they once were. All of these have been weekend fun cars, not daily drivers. To me, the Ferrari 360/Porsche 996 are kind of a toss up.

Of the modern Porsches, the 993 is the one that offers the mechanical rawness most similar to what you get in a modern Ferrari. They cost a bit more than the 996, but the build quality is much better, and arguably they're much better looking. The 993TT is a ~400 bhp car, but semi-collectible. Avoid the Tiptronic -- heavy, slow and stupid as far as gearboxes go.

Having had a 993 cabrio, I would say they're a bit "vintage" in operation, in that you have to snap on a boot. The 996/997 are fully automated. So, for the 993, I'd go with a sunroof coupe, RWD. Cabriolet 993s don't bring a premium, in my experience. I never tracked my 993, but as a road car the cabriolet is wonderful to drive, and you get to hear that engine. Just found the top fussy and not all that great-looking up or down.

The 993s are loud cars, compared to the 996/997, due to air-cooling. Most customers probably don't consider that a plus, but to me it made a huge difference. It feels and sounds like a sports car. It is narrower and shorter than the 996/997, so to me it also felt faster. 20 years from now, I think the 993 will be regarded as one of the few "keepers" from the 1990-2010 era production cars.

The 997 is the better of the water-cooled 911s. If you have a $100K budget, there are tons of them available lightly used. The glass-windowed cabriolet top is self stowing, and the cabin is improved over the rubbish 996 interior, so if you want modern I'd go 997. Cabriolets bring a premium. My brother's on his second 997 coupe and really likes them. I haven't driven a 997 cab, but the 996 was a nice luxury cruiser (though not a pretty car).

Thanks all for the advice and input. Id love to have both cars, but likely would choose one for garage space. I have looked at the 996/997 cars and like them as well. Will keep driving the F car for now, but Ill let my right foot and my butt tell me when I feel that magical drive and what car to buy. Thank you again!

Im not sure what you are looking for.

The best deal right now in Porsche world are the 996 GT2. You can pick a low mileage car for 75k, it comes with 480hp but as with any Turbo Porsche, you can easily get to 600hp for 10k.
It's 2WD, lightweight (in today's world) and can be driven to Target provided you dont wake up the Turbos and it's not snowing.

Or you can pick up a 2008 GT3, which would be an amazing track car with a high revving NA 3.6 engine (409hp). Can also be DD with winter tires.

Or if you want to buy something older, try to locate a 993 Turbo, those can be had from 50k to 80k for a very nice one. They are beautiful, AWD, 408hp and comfortable enough to drive everywhere..and i would say they will go up in value soon.

I agree. Porsche is no Ferrari, but they don't kid around either.

I could not disagree more- the 996 does not come close to the experience of the 360, nor is the quailty of the interior, looks or driver "one-with-the car" feeling close. Reliability may be a toss up, but nothing else.

I love porsches and had them for 20 years, so I don't feel this is a biased opinion against porsches in general. We are of course all entitled to our opinions of course ;)

I own a 430 but I still love Porsche as well. I think my next car will be a GT2 but I will always own a Ferrari from this point on.

No way I could sell mine and be happy with a Porsche unless it was a CGT.

I'm going to keep this between Porsche and Ferrari and ignore other sports cars and exotics that I have owned. My first was a 944, 928S, 3.2 Targa, 328GTS, Testarossa, 996TT, 996 Carrera modified, 360F1, F430, 2010 GT3. I have to say that the most extreme hardcore of all of this cars is the GT3 by far, fun factor is up there with the F430. My post might not help the original poster too much but who cares, right?

Ferrari offered (and offers) cheap plastic coatings that turn to goo, while Porsche (in the 996) offered plastic with a cheap simulated 'aluminum' that wore off after a year or so.

As to whether the 360's engine-destroying variator issue or the 996s RMS issue is worse, who knows.

Both cars were shameful. Both were fast, but the 458 and 997 are faster, better built, better handling and better looking.

Paul I own a 2002 Turbo Porsche that I bought at mecum. I also own a 458 and have owned a 360, 430. and a new, at the time 996 and 997 Porche. I love both car brands but it is hard to beat a Porsche. They are so reliable and fun cars.

Good luck to you on your choice

I know people keep saying the same thing..theyre fun, theyre reliable....but not much input on the emotional and really fun aspect of driving a ferrari versus a porsche. The ferrari makes me smile just starting it up, pulling down the street every kid from an 8 year old up to big kids love the car as much as I do. I saw several porsches this weekend, and I love the look. I really like the way they are so precice looking and functioning, but I guess my heart and my mind arent matching yet. Perhaps a few drives more will tell me different and Im sure the major service I plan for next year will REALLY REALLY tell me I should be driving a 991, 996 or 997 but I guess Ill have to wait and see. Perhaps I can talk my wife in to another garage?
Thank you all for your input, Please keep it coming.

Does anyone have input on a 996TT or 996TT cabrio versus an 09 or newer Cayman s or Cayman R? Love the look of the newer caymans, but seats etc issues.
The 996TT is a nice looking car with a little more room and perhaps a bit of tuneability if I want to turn up the HP. Any preferences in years of 996 cars?
    Thanks again
