My 456m has the usual broken ashtray issue common on the cars.

I have a NOS replacement, but I can’t feel the life of me figure out how I’m supposed to swap the cigarette lighter assembly without breaking it?

There appeared to be no screws or clips per se, just a spring that keeps it in place.

Do you take the spring off? Even with the spring off, I don’t see how it would twist off or anything.

my replacement does appear to have small grooves in the Cardle directions, but I’m not sure how that would matter here unless the spring is covering some thing that I can’t see that required for twisting it to come off

From your photo, the metal housing cannot be removed from the front because of the welded square assembly will prevent the assembly from moving through the plastic molding. Thus, there has to be some fastener on the front side that can be removed so the metal housing can be removed from the rear. A photo of the front side would be helpful.

You just twist the bottom and release. The loader assembly itself is separate from the spring/light assembly.

Push the outer metal housing down onto the spring and twist it until the notches line up and release, it comes right off
