Thanks for relevant input. I have noticed that many of the early cars have stamps showing denting and very uneven number depth, while the later cars seem to have a more flat stamp area - that look more industrialized (as a result of increase in production?) - and that the pre-stamped plates were welded in (Newman) on later cars. From the posts I now see that the only goes for the Boxers and not the 308.Please clarify someone if I am missing out the main points;).

I am also looking over the electricity - being very careful! Removing an old alarm from 1988 - and checking all connectors. I also found som relays that have been installed for the main lights etc. The headlights are a bit erratic - the right one goes up and down twice everytime I put them on and theft light stops working once I turn on the high beam? I suspect that I have to clean up the main switch at the steering column. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login

If the high beam portion of the bulb is burnt out you'll have one light off in the high beam position.

Try swapping the left and right headlight lifting relays and see if the up and down headlight moves to the other side. Free and easy test.

I have done that with the ones that are interchangeable - in the main relay board - but not the ones I just found;). I have looked over all the grounds.

A small update in my investigations - my cars first date of circulation in Switzerland was 01.10.77 - not March 1978 as we first thought. Image Unavailable, Please Login

There is a number of discrepancies here anyway.
The Letter of 7 February 2022 of the Swiss ASTRA (Federal Office in Bern, Switzerland), states date of First Registration was 10 March 1978 (10.03.1978). This was a Friday.
The Swiss Title posted in post 27 here states date of First Registration was 1 October 1977 (01.10.1977). This was a Saturday (hence absolutely impossible! Swiss Authorities are closed Saturdays).
The Swiss Title posted in post 72 here states date of First registration was 30 October 1977 (30.10.1977). This was a Sunday (hence absolutely impossible! Swiss Authorities are closed Sundays).
The Bächler mail posted in post 82 states date of First Registration was 1 October 1977 (01.10.1977). Again, this was a Saturday (hence absolutely impossible! Swiss Authorities are closed Saturdays).

Once again I strongly recommend to bring this car directly to Ferrari Classiche in Maranello, Italy (NOT to one of their agents in other countries).
That is the one and only place and authority which will be able to sort this all out. They will have the final word.
And yes, it is GONNA COST MONEY. A lot, for sure.
But the end result will be that you will have final proof what you own or not.

(PS: last but not least a 308 GTB with chassis number 20007 (last digit seven) was stolen in Italy about 43 years ago. 20007 was one of at least 29 stolen 308 GTB's in the early years, pre-1990.)

Mr Massini - many thanks for Your involvement. I have attached som screen dumps fra my correspondence with Astra that may shed some light over the dates. Perhaps this will make the Swiss documents appear less fraudulent;).

The old "bring the car to Maranello" melody surprises me - when You obviously must know and be very familiar with the proscessual complexity within this particular organization.

    Quote;

"We as a private company are not authorized to punch chassis numbers on older cars, only the Italian homologation department can do it."

"We can’t modify the current condition of the car, only the Italian motorization can modify the identification of cars so we are not authorized to modify the car and to recognize it".

"This modification were not made at the factory so we can’t help you today, only if original chassis punching will be found we can recognize the car".

Maybe this would have been easier with the right connections or if it was a 275. Another thing that puzzles me is that it has come to my knowledge that there in the recent years have been a case involving rebodying and restamping a 308.

So Mr. Tropea, Mr. Modena, Mr. Menegon are not interested.

So many stolen Ferraris - wow - a big clean up is on its a way - and for You Mr Massini - I guess more business;).

I read this entire thread…again…as I had kept up in 2022. Just go enjoy your car and let go of the frustration of the chassis number. It’s a beautiful car. It’s a steel dry sump GTB that’s legally yours and registered. It needs nothing else. Happy driving!

Thanks Hannibal308! You are right about this and I support your approach. I love the original color blu Acapulco/blue dino metalizzato! The car drives well, is fast and except from the resale-red paintjob in the 80ties otherwise unmolested.

I am currently going through the cooling system. I have had the radiator re-cored - and I am changing all the hoses, new expansion tank, plus engine hoses, gasoline etc. I have also been cleaning up the engine, the underside of the car, treating surface rust and changing rubber parts, bushings and so on. New rear engine mounts - and exhaust mounts. The manifold snapped in two and I hope the welding will do.

I was very lucky and came across a set of Campos in magnesium from 78 in Stockholm - I paid 1000 Euros for a set in good nick - 7,5 x 14`!

Lastly - I have a lead concerning the rebodied, renumbered, specialist approved (rumors says), Gr IV car with the same chassis number as mine - so lets see how this will end;)
