Im driving to Melb on Thursday night for the GP, cause i couldn't secure a flight in time :(

Any tips i should have before i make the trip down at aprox. 1am at night??

    Where to stop?
How long does the drive take usually?
    Speed Cameras?
    Police heavy zones?

I intend on keeping a steady 120km/hr most of the way. Ive heard it should take about 10 or so hours.

The longest ive driven to is Coffs, and that is a good 8 hours.. :)

Did the trip last month :) We took more than 10hrs but we stopped about 3-4times for siteseeing but if u only stop for food u should be able to get there under 10hrs. stopped at Yass Maccas for some early morning coffee then drove all the way to the border and stopped for lunch. Goulburn usually has afew cops buzzing around but the rest of the trip we didnt see many cops.

Being night time I guess watch out for wildlife.

Actually Im not going to GP this year, this makes me sad :(

Yeah i figured the stops would go like..
    Goulbourn
    Yass.
    Albury

From then on, i have no fkn idea about the state of Victoria. Where would a good place to stop be?

Im doing this through the early hours of the morning, and i am honestly concerned about fatigue. I cant leave earlier of the next day due to other situations, but still....

The GP should be great. Im also looking forward to seeing in the Fox Musuem is open this time around, not close for a private function... :)

Im guessing it will be the same though.

If there are 'roos about, 90km/h is usually fast enough - even if you've good driving lights, IMO. Without good lights, any greater speed is unnecessary risk. Or, sit a couple of hundred metres behind a big truck and take it easy. The drive doesn't really pose any unusual risks if you have a reasonable car and take it easy. The roads, last time I drove there, were really good in NSW and a fractionally lower standard in Vic.

    Safe travels,
    Pete

We actually stopped for lunch @ "The Pickled Olive" which is a new cafe-restie-pizzeria, in Euroa, about 1hr after the border(im guessing, was about 150km till melb). 2 very hot chicks serving us :D and it was one of the best fish n chips i ever had haha.

    Mike, depends on your priority.
If you need to be in melbourne as soon as possible I recomend stopping at Yass Mcdonalds for a short break. Refuell there and you should be able to hit Melb on one tank (600km approx). No other breaks.
I did this twice last week and both times it worked out at 8.5 hrs.
be carefull coming through Albury at night as the cops are eager to book.

hmm, seems some conservative views here, I drove down a few years ago after picking up one of the Sydney boys in the FCA and we did it in good time thanks to the Candy cars in VIC and a 3.0 litre Porsche Carrera, stopped for fuel once (80litre tank) and cruised at "comfortable" speed until spooked by the HWP, got into Melb early afternoon but as you're travelling at night (there are still flights on Jetstar !!?? just booked it myself) I think the 90-100kph is good advise, those roos make mincemeat of the front of a car and don't even think about hitting natures tank (the wombat)

I noticed more speed cameras on the way out than on the way in (none actually on the way in and 2 on the way out)

Remember the HWP in VIC are Nazis for speed and this is their big season with all the revheads going down

The roads in VIC are definitely better than in NSW

I've got a trip coming up in a few weeks of Melbourne to Sydney.

Looking at everything, was planning the stop in Albury and then in Goulburn.

Melbourne to Albury is about 350km (according to travelmate.com.au), then to Goulburn is about 300km, then onto Sydney about couple of hundred (depending on where in Sydney).

I figure 3 hours per driving shift is about as long as I would want, and that wouldn't slow me down too much.

With a 80litre tank and the economy of cruising in a Vette, I might even make it on one tank :D (prolly not, and I don't eben plan on trying)

Flights for me have become unavailable due to timing, and my mate that is going down with me cant make the flights etc... etc...

Im thinking 3 hr shifts of driving, but kind of disapointed to hear about the Roo problem. Was thinking an easy 110-120 KMphr the whole way, it would kill me doing 90 on a highway though...

The cars lighting aint too bad, its a brand new Liberty 3.0RB. We will see how it goes....

I dont find it to be the most comfortable thing to drive long distances in. The liberty is a ton better. It attracts a whole lot less attention, and is the better alternative, as it will be parked outside for the whole stay.

Chose to opt out for taking it down this year.

I'm doing a similar trip down from Sydney but I'm leaving at around 9pm Friday night and driving all night. I agree with most of the previous advice. I've drivento Melbourne like this a lot and frequently drive to the Qld Gold Coast through the night. Night driving is great for lack of traffic but you need good eyes and your wits about you. I usually have 2 or 3 stops to Melbourne (food, fuel etc) but mainly to stretch the legs and refresh - that's the key to a good run down. I've never seen a roo on the Hume Hwy run in all the years I've travelled the road. Beware of the HWP @ places like Goulburn and Albury and keep an eye out for the numerous fixed speed cameras. There may also be a convoy of trucks heading down the Hume at around the time your'e leaving but they won't pose a problem if you obey their road rules. I'm travelling down on my own but have to pick up my son and his mate at Avalon Airport on Saturday morning @ 8am. Can any of the Victorian posters advise me the best way to exit the Hume Hwy north of Melbourne for Avalon. I assume I branch off the Hume between Brunswick/Carlton North and head towards Flemington until I reach the Princes Hwy, then onto the Princes Freeway to Avalon. The trip back into the City I believe is via the Princes Fwy and then onto the West Gate Fwy to Albert Park. I hope SHUEY does well over the GP weekend. And, do the FCA members congregate anywhere in particular @ trackside?

You could do 3-4hrs no problem once you get some sunlight, you should be able to do 110-120kmh all the way and as long as its under 120, u shouldnt get booked.

The roo problem isnt that bad but you will see dead roos on the road soo they are there. I almost collected a Roo in Goulburn afew years back and it was prob the lower speed(was about to enter freeway) that saved my ass.

Just bring lots of music CD's, my little trip around oz, we had to listen to AM in some parts cause we forgot hahaha

If you can get your hands on a radar detector you will have a fairly good run.
My cliental is 95% truck drivers and the radars have never failed them, they say albury is a hot spot for the police but arent concerned due to having a RD. As for roo's get yourself a roo shu, Very cheap from most car parts retailers.
