Synchronizing Ghibli carbs

Well, now that the timing is set, it's on to the carbs. I was reviewing the article by Kestenbaum and, pathetically, I'm stuck on the second step...dc'ing the accelerator cable.
Does anyone have any suggestions on precisely how to do this? Can it just be loosened, or does it need to be removed from the linkage. Do you need to unthread the rod all the way or just exactly what? Are there more detailed instructions for this part and/or pix?
