Teach me about synchros in the Dino. For a car to be considered correct, need it shift flawlessly into second, up and down, COLD? My car never has done that. Once its warm it shifts up into second great, but it takes a bit if coaxing going down from third even when warm. Furthermore, my car needs to be virtually stopped, or walking speed to slip into first. So, is the natural state of these cars like mine or should it be flawless even when cold? Thanks.
I just installed all new synchros in my 308 'box which is very much the same as your gearbox and it shifts as you describe. Walking pace to get it into first, it shifts ok into any gear cold but it requires some heat in the 'box to shift smoothly.
It's been a while, but my clear recollection is that my car was always reluctant to shift into second when cold. In fact, many people advocate shifting Dinos from first to third until the box warms up in order to preserve the synchros. I adhered to the practice fairly religiously. As for going into first while moving, I think that's also a common issue. Double-clutching helps, but unless you're in a hurry, it's probably best to use second gear. Here's a pertinent quote from Road & Track's May 1972 road test: "It's often difficult to get the recalcitrant, gated shifter into 1st and sometimes it doesn't want to go from 4th to 5th either; the acceleration runs were further hampered by the necessity of quite deliberate motion to get from 1st to 2nd." I think all this pretty much answers your question.
Well known Ferrari problem up to/ incl 355, my Dino and 328GTB are the same. Dino fully resored and 328GTB with 37000 km. Ciao/ Bjrn
Perfectly normal state of affairs in my experience. My Mondial does the exact same thing and #03666 does the same thing with all new synchro rings. I always have to shift from 1 to 3 even with Redline 80w90. The change in lube helped but didn't totally fix the issue.
Interesting. My car did EXACTLY the same thing back in the day. Even after we replaced the synchros, 2nd was always a little flighty. First while moving faster than about 5MPH, fugget aboudit. (Although as I recall, we simply flipped the first gear synchro, as we had a hard time finding one.) Kind of a fascinating parallel experience, wouldn't ya say? D
This is normal behavior for these gearboxes. Actually I tend to skip second gear a lot even when the box is warm because the ratios are so close and I want to preserve second gear as best I can. Just rev it a bit more in first and then go to third.
I used to have to double clutch my Dino from 1st to 3rd when cold for years. Forget trying second when cold or it would just grind or knash it's way together. Then, one day, the oil seal broke between the engine and the gearbox. I had to remove the gearbox and at the same time, I replaced the 2nd gear synchro. My goodness what a difference! I could actually shift from 1st to 2nd dead cold (well, LA cold) like a normal car. I continued to double clutch to help save the synchro. But replacing second and the clutch cable were the two biggest improvements I ever made on that car. Like -- night and day.
So, a Dino can't qualify for Coppa Bella Macchina because: 1. 2nd gear synchro issues 2. Virtually all have had their choke lever/cable disconnected 3. Missing the air/smog pumps and related plumbing
When the box is cold going from 1st to 3rd in any vintage or classic Ferrari is a requirement. You wait for the oil needle to come off the peg. It's in your owners manual.........really..........look it up.
Thank you, D. I was really concerned about that. I guess I'll just have to stay away from any and all FCA IFCSAVVCASVITTFTCAFAASPCAFBICIASEC judged events.
