Is there anyone out there who has fixed this problem. It seems a major flaw to make the dial so prominent only to then design it to be a black tube! I have the yellow dial and it is impossible to see the needle in daylight driving....

Common problem with the yellow tach.

Do you have the LED's on the steering wheel? Most threads report that the LED's are more useful than the tach (when the tach is visible).

I don't think anyone has found a way to improve visibility on the yellow tach during the day.

Search for yellow tachometer, yellow tach, yellow rev counter. Lots of good info.

I miss my 430 yellow tach. That being said, I got the yellow on 458 coupe and on arriving spider. I specced this reluctantly: great color when you can see it, but usually during day you cannot. Ferrari not backlighting this was insulting. Especially at car's asking price. In all fairness however, I think the biggest disappointment is loss of visual appeal of yellow tach while driving. Functionally I do fine without it. I cannot believe anyone driving the car cannot gauge RPM by exhaust note or if specced, red lights in steering wheel. If exhaust note and feel is not enough on those track days or because you are riding near the red line continually, then turn on the lights. Tach becomes back lit (white numerals on black with red needle) and you can see it clearly during day.

I have the same issue and learned to use the LEDs for upper RPM shift points. If you have them, you ought to be using them. I now find that the LEDs are actually more useful than any tach for the lower gears because the engine spools up so fast, you really don't want to be looking down at the tach anyway.

The problem is that the tach is way down that hooded tunnel and not back lit, whereas other color tachs (black, for example) are back lit. It is one of those quirky Ferrari decisions; someone said, "Hey. It's yellow. We don't need to backlight it."

The way to solve this is to put it in the driving light setting and the tach becomes backlit.

I don't know why they did not backlight the tach all the time because it was that way with the F430.

That being said, the Tach is a much useful on this car as a hand crank starter would be. The car revs so freely you don't have time to look at the tach. That's what the red LED's on the wheel are for -- just like a race car.

I picked a black tach instead of yellow for this reason but it doesn't really matter since the LEDs are far more useful. Don't worry about it if you have the LEDs, just learn to use them.

Unfortunately the manual light backlight is not strong enough to make much difference in daylight.

Anyway as you say, once you accommodate to the LEDs, the tach becomes an anachronism. I think other manufacturers should adopt it (e.g., hot Porsches, BMWs and the like).

I have the LEDs on the top of the steering wheel, but I find the passenger beginning to scream in panic as the real clue it is time to up-shift as the rev's approach the red line. :D

yes,the black tach is back lighted during the day as is the red tach The yellow and white tachs are not back lighted during the day.
Had a yellow tach on my 458 and hated it.Sure its not necessary and leds are more useful however why put a tach in at all if it can't be seen!?
On my spider I have a black which is perfect.

There's a group that meet at Beverly Glen Center one Sunday every month...you might see one there. Ask BH Ferrari when they'll be there next.

That's not a problem. That's why we take them there, so people can look at them, take photos and video. I'm sure no driver/owner would mind showing you the LED display on the steering wheel and explaining how it works. Try it...I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Haven't had any real issues with a yellow tach. Yes would have been nice to have it backlit during the day, but change gears by engine sound and feel more than looking at the tach. Besides then needle is lit red so it's not like you see nothing.

Nevertheless, it's pick the one that makes you happy, not others...

I realise that the LED wheel is much more useful, which is what i have, but that is not the point. Why put in any dial if you can't then see it...!

i chose yellow for my 360 and 430 and it worked well. However, I chose white for my 458. Atlhough your cricitism is valid, i.e a dial in that "works", after driving my car for a few thousand miles, contrasting my use of the tach in the other cars, I might as well have a blank space where the tach is located for all the good it does me (and it is visible). Best

I have yellow and I see everything (I don't have LED lights on wheel). Again, one needs to look at them in real life and just pick the one he/she feels most comfortable with, everyone is different.

How hard would it be to change out the tach from yellow to black? Do they have to remove the whole dash or is it easier than that?
