Has anyone ever taken their car to Europe for a month or so and then shipped it back home?

I'm thinking of spending an extended vacation in Europe, and it wouild be nice to drive my own car while I'm there.

Can anyone with experience doing this tell me what to look out for? Are there regulatory hurdles I'm going to have to get over? Can I drive in Europe with a US license plate?

Any web sites with information on them?

I've done some Google searches, but have come up with nothing truly helpful.

You can take your car with US plates without any problem for up to 6 months to Europe. You have to prove that your car is insured, and that you are a US resident and you will get a stamp from customs that you will need to have your shipper release the car. Keep that form with you, in case that you get stopped and checked.

I have special permission to have my car with NY plates in Europe for three years. I have been stopped and checked twice in one year. The normal police will not check up on you, but around international airports, the custom police is driving around to check on foreign licence plate cars.

As far as the insurance is concerned, that was the most difficult thing to figure out. Almost all insurance companies are only covering domestic travel. If you go with your car to Canada or Mexico, you are probably not insured. If you need to know how we solved this, send me a PM.
