My 308 has badly cracked (checked metallic) paint. Seems that since it goes down into the primer that it needs to be stripped down back to metal. Most likely the primer will also have to come off. This is a daily driver with a few minor rust bubbles. Of course it could be worse when the paint comes off. anyway, I do want to repaint the car though the thought of a 15-20k job of which I have been quoted seemed a bit extreme. Somehow since Michael Sheehan's article on painting a 308-the price has gone up 10k-go figure?
My thinking is that if I do the prep work myself-ie-removing items, and stripping the paint I can cut the cost in half. Has anyone done this? Am I totally crazy in thinking I can do this in my garage this winter? Your feedback is appreciated-cheers

You really should be talking it over with the guy that will be doing the painting.

i agree with brian on this. yrs ago i was restoring an old BMW and the body shop said i could save 5k by stripping it myself and having the chassis brought it. so i did, spent 2months on/off stripping the car first to just the chassis. then the paint.

end result, more work for the shop. we ended up media blasting it to bare. the reason was i'm not a body guy and my stripping it down to primer was hard enough and it left lots of waves high/low spots. the only thing i saved was the stripping down of the interior and drive train.

to do it right you want it empty so they cam paint it everywhere. it's ALOT of work.

after i was done i couldn't drive it. knowing that i spent 20k on paint it was way to stressfull. ended up selling it becouse it was no longer fun.

That's a great point Scott. Once you've spent 20k in paint , will you want to drive it anywhere? Right now I'm not overly worried about a nick here or there-from 10ft the silver paint looks great. I can totally understand your lack of enjoyment due to worrying about the paint. Something I should consider I suppose....

It's a huge project, but my guy insists that it's a bad idea to strip thru factory fillers and prefers to "fill and seal" his way back to a good finish, sanding only the cracked material off to primer, then building back up.......

"In some case you need to go to bare metal, but this is NOT one of them....." per his discussion......

I'm about to go through this myself on my 308 and this is what I feel to be the best compromise.

Do all of the disassembly yourself (there is a lot of labor and detail work here) and have the paint shop strip and paint the car. That way if anything goes wrong it is their responsibility. There are a lot of steps along the way where mixing your labour pool can result in problems for everyone. Once the car is painted, have it returned to you WITH THE DOORS HUNG. It is very easy to damage the paint hanging the doors as they are hard to handle.

Get lots of estimates and talk to a lot of people. A show paint job is useless for a daily driver and any good refinish will be better than the factory work. It is possible to get a better than OEM job for $5-7,000 without skimping on quality. Rust will raise this price but probably not by a lot. I have a 308, been researching this, and have a background in automotive paint. Good luck with the project.
