Normally I don't drive my 456 in the wet, but today I had to. This has revealed a problem with water coming in at the bottom of the doors. The carpet on the bottom of the door is drenched and also onto the floor mat. The door seals look OK but need to check more thoroughly.

Is this a common problem? Any thoughts?

More problematic could be the bottom drain plugs and not the weather seal. Check the floor board round plugs if the 456s have them.

More than likely someone had your door panel off at one time and did not replace the plastic that covers the access to the window mechanism. If this is not done, any water making its way past the window seal will fall onto the back of the door panel, we the carpet and drip onto the floor. The attached picture shows the passenger door in the stock configuration and the driver's door with an earlier solution I was using.

Make sure you did not clog up your air conditioning evaporator vent hose with mud, too. That can lead to wet carpets.

can also just be the classic window back not meeting the rubber surround and allowing water in - then it follows the door panel down and gets absorbed by the carpet on the underside of the door (btw, why do they have carpeting there??).
