Impressive no doubt, but 'one of the most amazing sports stories of the 21st century' seems like a stretch.
I worked with Curt for about three years on several projects. I found him to be arrogant, obnoxious, outspoken, grating, overbearing... I could go on and on. BUT, at the same time, he was generous with his time for any number of charites, including ALS, with whom he still works very closely, and had a tight circle of friends who were fiercely loyal to him, and vice/versa. He's a bright guy. Knows what it takes to win, and usually does just that. Not real popular with some of his teammates when he was here in Philly, but very popular with the fans, because he wants to win, and he's a gamer. I'd take him on my team, or in my town, any day of the week. Actually, a funny story goes along with the 1st time I met him. I was out of the office, and he called to make an appointment to see our facility. He told the receptionist it was "Curt Schiling" on the phone, and that he'd like to speak to me. She was sure it was a buddy of mine making a joke, so she told him, "Sure, come on down now". Remember, I was out of the office. He walks in the door, my receptionist just about craps her pants and has to explain that she thought he was a prank caller, and that I wasn't there. After a moment of silence, he laughed, shook it off, and sat and talked with some of my other folks. She called me on the cell, stammered that he was in the office, I rushed back, the rest is history.
The Astros used to have Schilling. They should have kept him. Too bad. Mike Marshall (former Dodger) used to play for the R. Sox. I cannot remember the manager at the time. He said that M.M.** would go on the 21 day D.L; if he got shampoo in his eyes. **(not the F-chat M.M.)
