Looking for a friends birthday gift, known him for years. He likes Glenlivet, but reading through the other threads it sounds like "the BMW of scotch". Fine, but the serious scotch guys know better. I think he would prefer a Speyside style scotch. I don't think he has developed a scotch palette yet.

I love Macallan, but I would like to get him something different. Dave will say "Oban 14", and I will pick it up, but I'm concerned it will be too smokey/peaty for his taste. How smokey is it?

As a hedge against a better choice, I already purchased a Glenlivet 18 after standing in BevMo for 20 mins vacillating in front of the scotch case. I will exchange it for a better rec!

    He arrives in 5 days.

    Thanks in advance.

Personally, I'm not a fan of Oban. Talisker is far less peaty and is comparably priced, I believe. Also, Bruichladdich is pretty good. In the Bruichladdich, though, I found the older-than-12 to be significantly more appealing. To my palate, anyway.

Highland Park, however, has won quite a few awards, and it's reasonably priced. Or was. That might be a nice alternative.

The real problem is that there are just too many. Pick something in your price point. Or ask the purveyor for some help.

You can never go wrong with either of those two in my book! The 25 year old is pushing $600 plus in these parts now, though! And I thought it was expensive when it was "only" $325! :(

    ^^^ No, I'm not buying a $600 scotch. Closer to a $60 bottle.

Thank you! I will look into Talisker.

I agree on the extreme number of choices.

If he doesn't like/isn't ready for the smokey, peaty, flavor which is the only reason I drink Scotch; then stay away from the Islay single malts such as Laphroaig 10 year or Ardbeg 10 year, they are the peatiest I've tried and my two favorites. Their distilleries are about a mile apart on the same road...

Cadenheads, North Port Brechin 20, Should be ~$150. There is an 11 y/o that should be closer to $100.

I haven't been there in a while but the Wine Depot on Balboa and Saticoy had a great selection last time I was out there. Wine Expo on SM BLVD is another good choice, as well as Hi-Times in Costa Mesa. Jerrys Liquor is a rip off.
