When I was about 10 years old, living in San Jose, I started to listen to talk radio (KGO then). I listed to a guy names Ira Blue. he was about 70 years old and enjoyable to listen to.

I still listen to a lot of talk radio. A few months ago, I got totally hooked on Phil Hendry. My God is he a crack-up (And balances out Michael Savage!).

Are you a talk show junkie or have a favorite satation / Host?

I started listening to talk radio at a young age 10 or 11. I used to listen to WBZ in Boston at night they had on Larry Glick, Norm Nathan, Bob Raleigh, David Brudnoid (sp?) R.I. is big on talk radio so we also had a lot of local talent I'd listen to. The only syndicated hosts I really enjoy are Bruce Williams, who is still on, and G.Gordon Liddy who I always find very entertaining and wish he were still on in my area.

Liddy is great too. And he's not on in Dallas anymore either.

I used to enjoy most conservative talk programs, but lately most have gotten as unlistenable as the liberal media outlets that they spew on and on about. I am a Bush-loving Texas Republican. But if I wanted to hear a sermon, I would go to church. The conservative talk shows on the radio today are as gut-wrenchingly annoying as any liberal media outlet. This goes for Fox News as well.

    Anyone else feel this way?

I do. If I listen to R. Limbaugh I only retain about 20% of what he has said. He just drones on and on with his sermon like format. It's like back in our school days I'm sure we all had teachers who just droned on and on and we all drifted off but we also had teachers who made things interesting who spiced it up a bit and I for one got a lot more out of that kind of public speaking.

I first heard Rush when I moved to Sacra-tomato in 1987. I'll never forget the first time I heard him do a condom update. I was driving to work, and he did the update to the theme of the 5th Dimension's "Up, up, and away in my big yellow balloon." I started laughing so hard that I had to pull off the freeway. What was even funnier was that two other cars also pulled over.

He also used to do gerbil updates in honor of a un-named actor that I will not get into.

What you have to realize is that Rush revolutionized talk radio in many ways. The updates, bumper music, no guests, his business model, and, most of all, call screening. This last point is what changed everything. Before screeners, almost every talk show consisted of two themes. One was the same losers calling in again and again. The second was that the host would automatically take the opposite position just to get people rilled up on the hope that maybe, just maybe, somebody new would call.

There's more to Rush's schtick. For example, when he says that he is "the balance," he is referring back to when the local radio station would follow his show with a flaming *** as "balance" against Rush's show. I'm using this term to illustrate, not to demean. But I'm sure that Rush was offended that his programing director thought that he had to schedule a real wacko to counter balance his show.

On the downside, Rush is a Republican puppet. I have been listening to him on and off for over 15 years, and I can count on one hand the number of times that he has stepped out of rank.

Also, in the early days, Rush was not very educated, particularly on economic issues. To his credit, though, he has done a great job in catching up.

At the end of the day, he is an entertainer, warts and all. I met him a couple of times socially during our Tomato days, and he is a super nice guy. The bomblastic schtick is a show. However, like most entertainers he is dysfunctional. Brilliance always comes with an edge.

Ditto. I haven't been able to listen to Rush in years. I do watch a few minutes of Fox & Friends in the morning, but don't watch anything on Fox the rest of the day.

Him too! The last time I heard him on the air was about a year ago. He had that 'everyboby's Grampa' voice and charm. I agree about Rush...bla-bla-bla-bla...........

Being in college I don't listen to talk radio very often. When I started working for my dad and delivering for him is when I started listening to talk radio. Before that I constantly told my parents i hate talk radio and will never listen to it. So I lied. I like Jim Rome, Chris Baker, O'Reilly(watch and listen when i feel like it or i can). There are a few that I listen to that I can't think of, but kind of hard to think about it when you don't listen very often.

My parents, specifically my mom, loves Rush Limbaugh. Personally I hate the guy. I find him to be an extreme-right wing wacko and is just unbelievably annoying. He sounds more of a whinner than an explainer.

Nothing personal, but your comment is hilarious considering that you are feeding off of the nipple of Liberalism in the US. Universities are the bastion of Liberalism to the extreme (which you obviously consider middle of the road)... remember that those who can't work or get a job... teach.

Nothing Personal, but I see that you have been brainwashed by Rush. I hear his voice when I read your words. This rhetoric is exactly what I am talking about... true yes, but also, very cliche'. Don't just regurgitate what you have heard.

I listen to Rush on rare occasion. Dr. Laura on rare occasion. Used to like listening to Michael Regan but he got dropped locally.

But mainly I listen to LoveLine and Coast to Coast AM. Hilarious and occasionally interesting shows.

Then you can tell me why 98% of the teachers in academia are Liberal Democrats? Rhetoric my a$$. You don't see that the teachers unions are some of the strongest Liberal lobby organizations in the country? Give me a break (talk about rhetoric). Read some of these links to the National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers and tell me that they are flaming Liberals.

Viper, my apologies, you were the victim of an ill-concieved late-night post fueled by too much light beer. I regret having attacked your post, I happen to agree with your point.

Thanks Dave for being forthright. I didn't want this conversation to get out of hand, but it didn't seem like there was much positive being said about Conservative talk radio... other than the rhetoric being spewed by Franken and company.

As much as people fault Limbaugh for his delivery, many on the Conservative side of the aisle will credit him for being the guy that turned around a sinking Conservative movement (along with Gingrich's Contract with America). The fact that political talk is dominated by Conservatives is a testiment to this.

George Soros has proven that you also can't buy the Presidency. He IS the biggest single financial contributor to Liberal talk radio movement (http://www.airamericaradio.com/) and propaganda generators like www.MoveOn.org (http://www.moveon.org/victories.html ). Ironically, he isn't even and American citizen...

Isn't it comforting to know that a foriegn billionaire's goal in life is to de-construct the American cultural and political system?
