Hey, I'am making the F2001 tamiya model but im not sure what to glue it with. I live in the UK and cannot find the tamiya cement which the instructions say you should use anywhere.

Can I use another type of glue like superglue or araldite?

    Cheers, Dan

I'm certainly no expert, but I used to assemble and paint a few models when I was younger (mostly fighters/bombers). Preferably, you should use modelling cement for this application. It need not be the same brand, but you should be able to find something that's equivalent. The UK brand glue is called Airfix, I believe, and it should work fine. Have you tried a specialist model hobby shop ?

A lot of these model glues were restricted at one point because of safety (flammability and inhalant abuse) concerns, but some should definitely still be available.

I don't know much about superglue, but I've never used it for delicate or artistic applications, only for rough work. Same with Araldite. The only Araldite glue I've used before is the binary stuff - two tubes, one red, the other white, mix them together and bonding occurs with slight exothermy. Dried Araldite is strong, but tends to yellow with age. Not an effect you want for a display model.

I'm not sure if they've got rapid Araldite (one tube) now, maybe that's more appropriate. But I'd still say to go with the dedicated modelling cement. :)

Dan: for glueing small items after painting and clear plastic parts, I reccomend Formula 560 which is a canopy glue for R/C airplanes, but I use it for plastic models. It is very strong and dries clear, and wipes off with a damp cloth. But for gluing pieces together before sanding and painting I reccomend the testors brush glue that melts the parts together.

I use super glue for the plastic bits, and I used plain old white glue for the clear parts.

    Steve,

I heard superglue would melt plastic so I never tried it. You, obviously, haven't experienced this. Would you mind telling me what type superglue you use? Thank you, Dane

    Dane,

I am using "Loc Tite" (sp) brand...the kind with the brush applicator. I find it's real easy to brush on large bits and then I can spread it on a scarp piece of paper and use a tooth pick to place it on real fine spots.

I haven't had any melting issues,BUT you can't even think of using it for clear parts as it will fog them instantly beyond repair. that is why I sue white glue, or the Testors "clear parts cemet" works even better.

    Best
