Haven't seen this posted but I am experiencing a tapping noise in the back of the car which sounds like the valves even after an extended drive when I'm idleing. If I then accelerate and really open up the valves it goes away.
It seems to happen after the car has been sitting for a while and then I take it out for a ride. It's a dd so it's getting milage ('08 w/ 10m miles) but I just started noticing it.
Doesn't affect the operating or anything else just wondering, if it is the valves, why they wouldn't be closing after the drive when I come to a stop.
    Any help would be appreciated.

It could be a cracked header. Just a slight hairline crack and you will hear something. Hopefully that is all it is.

The thing is that the noise is not there all of the time. it does stop when I really open up the valves on a quick start and it doesn't come back.
If the header had a crack wouldn't I hear it all of the time?

My header failure tapping would go away when the car warmed up some of the time. Remember the exhaust system moves almost an inch from thermal expansion.

Have your headers checked at the dealer. Or do it yourself using a smoke test.

    Better safe than sorry.

    Post what you find.

    Hi Trent,
I had the exhaust manifold replaced (under warranty) 6m miles ago. The car is going in for it's one year this week.
    I'll let you know.
Took it out today for a short Run and no noise - strange.

6 million is a lot of miles even for the space shuttle.

My 16k 2006 F430 is getting its third set of headers installed this week (if the parts come in). They fail often.

Either way you might want to consider the Capristo exhaust brackets $550 USD, they relieve the stress on the exhaust system and is cheap insurance and a fairly quick install.

The tapping sound is most commonly the fuel injectors clicking, it 100% normal. Many cant hear it because its often masked by the sweet exhaust note. I ve heard mine since day one along with every car I eve hear at the dealer or shows. Its just the fuel in jectors, my daily driver does the same thing, but the rear engine and glass deck lid make it easier to hear in the f430.

    Thanks for your input Mike.

I am having the car serviced today so I'll ask them about it.

    I'll let you know.
