It's not like it used to be Karen. HK has really changed over the past couple of years. It overcrowded with mainlanders , toxic air pollution, and is so overpriced now that people are bypassing it as a destination....Big corporations are also looking elsewhere as they can't afford to do business there anymore.......

Ah, so I was not remembering wrong.

The organizers invited our club, the Classic Car Club of Hong Kong, to go and arranged for the shipping etc. hence we decided to join. Will check out Targa Tasmania Tour some day, thanks for the recommendation.

I don't think I'd put too much into that report - Tung Chung is certainly not the easiest way into Macau from the mainland... but i do intend to try out the bridge for myself in Dec... God, I must be old - I remember taking the overnight steamer to Macau for the f3 GP the first year I lived in HK because all the jetfoils were booked out!

2 biggest bargains in the world - Star Ferry in HK and the tall ship (Lady Nelson?) operated by volunteers in Hobart...

I'd add the Manly ferry to that list, $4 for a harbour cruise :)

But I agree, the Star Ferry is one of the world's special experiences.

There are considered to be 4 great harbours of the world.

    Hong Kong
    Sydney
    Rio de Janeiro
    San Francisco

I have been to all except Rio.

We should organise a Rio GG and time it for the Carnival.

Moretti could get a Brazilian. Again.

    Hi Karen,
I too remember my first trip on that smelly, rickety old night ferry boat. With sponsorship from Cathay Pacific I used to participate in the HK Karting Prix and would take in the Macau GP as "gopher" for the GP, (I still had aspirations to race cars) It was 1975 and my mentor was John Macdonald who ended up a 4 time winner of the GP, we had the first new Ralt RT1 fitted with a Cosworth FVA formula 2 motor. Just 4 of us weekend warriors made up the winning Rothmans/Cathay Pacific team. JM was a Frank Matich style hard taskmaster from whom I learned a lot of tough life lessons. I went to live in HK during 1976 and by 1977 cobbled enough money to rent a March 76B and we put Andrew Miedecke in to steer it. On the thinnest of shoestrings we somehow got the car to Macau, qualified 8th and took P3 podium in a race won by Riccardo Patrese in the latest works Chevron. I remember a lot of big names on that grid from then, Kevin Bartlett, Alan Jones, Graeme Lawrence, Vern Schuppan, Mashiro Hasemi, Satoru Nakajima, Albert Poon, Bob Rapp, Grant Swartz. That was the end of my "Eddie Jordan" episode, thereafter I knuckled down to a proper job, & with some fantastic partners we ended up as Ferrari dealers by 1983. The rest.......as they say......is distant history !!
Hong Kong and Macau during the 1970's really was a primitive Oriental adventure.
