In that year both had been held as a combined event, date was 20 March 1949. Among some other Ferraris, including of course the winning car, but which are not topic here, I have in my notes the following entry: "Giampiero Bianchetti / Ferdinando Righetti - Ferrari - DNF" The website of the Targa Florio (http://www.targaflorio.info/index2.htm) shows as DNF (retiro) "[349] Pierluigi Bianchetti / X Ferrari 166 MM/2,0" and also "[348] Ferdinando Righetti / X Fiat STANGUELLINI 1500 Sport" I have no idea whether Righetti indeed drove a Stanguellini, or whether he was copilot for Bianchetti, but some things are quite clear: - Bianchetti's name was not Pierluigi, but Giampiero - there was no other driver with the name "Bianchetti" - Giampiero Bianchetti never owned a 166 MM - the only MM in that race was the works car of Franco Cortese, most probably 0010M or 0016M So which entry is correct? And which car did Bianchetti drive? He had 2 available, the Spyder Corsa 014I, and the coupe 003S.
Bianchetti and 003S - I can close an open topic finally with your help. As this thread is "hot" now - anybody able to post a photo of Cortese (#344)??
Maybe here? http://www.targapedia.com/photogallery/TargaFlorio/1949/TARGA%20FLORIO%20-%209%20GIRO%20DI%20SICILIA%201949%20-%20FERRARI/index.html
So this is a mystery even for you. All my listings for the 1949 TF/Giro Sicilia show Bianchett/Righetti DNF in 014 with no race number. The #349 on 003 however fits with the Bracco/Maglioli car#346 and the Vallone/Sighurolfe car #337. There is no confusing 003 and 014 and the picture of #349 is definitely 003. Now 003 was com[pleted in time for the 1948 TF but the number 349 doesn't fit.The TF of 1950 had numbering that could include #349 but I have no record of eather 003 or Bianchetti in that event.Let's see if M.M. or Ardy or Sir L have an opinion. Was there another 1949 event with cars numbered in the high 300s? Finally in one of the pictures of 003 there is"TCR" with what appears to be a time of 01 day/07 hours/13 minutes/15 seconds. just one man's opinion tongascrew
#337 - Roberto Vallone / Sergio Sighinolfi - 166 Inter SC - #006I #343 - Franco Cortese / X - 166 MM - #0010M or #0016M #344 - Clemente Biondetti / Aldo Benedetti - 166 Inter SC - #006I #346 - Bruno Sterzi / Enzo Monari - 166 Inter SC - proposals invited #347 - Giovanni Bracco / Umberto Maglioli - 166 Inter SC - #012I #349 - Giampiero Bianchetti / X - 166 Sport - #003S
Hi, thanks much. So you are sure it's 003 and not 014. Any idea where all that 014 stuff came from. It's everywhere tongascrew
This photo (photographer officially unknown) shows 006I at Monaco 1948. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Yes, as a rolling chicane....! Did you post this because of the different look of 006I at the 1949 TF? The bodywork was facelifted during the winter, as nearly all Spyder Corsas 006I received the new "corporate identity" eggcrate grille, and was converted to sports car. The Monaco photo clearly shows that originally 006I was no 2-seater, but an offset singleseater. The cover above the left cockpit side was non-removable, and the nose had no drills for headlights (I have a slightly better resolution of that photo).
Perhaps a silly question, but chassis #006I is listed for both Roberto Vallone / Sergio Sighinolfi (DNF) as Clemente Biondetti / Aldo Benedetti (1st)???
Oops - bloody copy-paste...! Vallone of course had 008I which according to some sources was renumbered 0012M.
This is a interesting topic. I am looking for quit a long time for good pictures of the winning car: 166 SC #344. (chassis 006I) There are only a few unclear pictures Because I am missing this car in my Targa Florio Ferrari collection of TF winners. So that a proffesional kit builder can built the model for me based on a TRON kit TRON has some models of 166 SC. But unfortenatly not the #344. TRON says they are going to release the model of the #344 this summer/fall. But this seems to me quit difficult when it is based on the available pictures I know. There is a model of the 166 SC 006I, #1049, Mille Miglia 1948. But the nose is quit different in comparing to the #344 car. 006I, like most of 166 Inter, received in 1949 a new nose with egg crates grille. Only 010I with Folland (UK) and 016I with Cunningham (USA) kept their 1948 nose...
Thanks for the info. Is this the only modification comparing to the 1948 car? The only good pictures are the frontside
Sorry but, if I'm sure that #1049 was 006I, I'm not 100% convinced that the #344 was 006I... And almost all s/n given above (except 003S for #349) seem suspect for the 1949 Targa Florio, especially #347 which can NOT be 012I...
There are indeed some mistakes in my list. 006I for Vallone is simply a typo, must read 008I (or as some say renumbered to 0012M). #347 for Bracco is wrong, it is based on the Fondi TF book. Correct is #345, which incorrectly is shown by Fondi as Bracco's 1950 race number. Indeed he had there #432. So the photo showing Bracco with #345, and which sometimes is captioned wrongly as 1950, is in fact from 1949. And it clearly shows 012I. I am well aware that you and some others believe the serials of the 2 Scuderia Inter cars are the other way round, thus 006I for the horseshoe grill car. Unfortunately nobody up to now was ready to present arguments for that, and also nobody was ready to discuss this matter on a friendly and openminded basis. So how to proceed...?
If the Troubetskoy car at Monaco was 006I there's no doubt that the Nuvolari car was not 006I. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
