I'm planning a three/four day trip to recce the the Targa Tassie course. First time there, so looking if there are any suggestions of places to visit. Interesting caryards/wrecking yards, old book shops (with old car books) etc.. Already on my list is to see the old Longford motor racing circuit.

If you are doing a proper reccie you will need more time than that without any sight seeing. Do yourself a favour and buy the professional pace notes for the event and take them with you. Great opportunity to add/edit them to suit yourselves. When I last did it I went for a week and did every corner in every stage twice. Once for pace notes at a slow speed and then again using notes at faster pace. IMO this event is all about the prep b4 the event as much as the race itself.

That's the way to do it. You don't want to be going flat over crest during the race at some crazy speed only to be confronted by a sharp left....."**** they stuffed the notes" being your last thought on earth.

The notes need to be checked for accuracy before the event. After all your life depends on them.

Yes, that's what has been done for CA in the past, but TT looks a different ballgame with longer and tighter stages. The proper notes are consistent, then you can spend a bit more time on fine tuning the details. Also I do realise that four days will be a squeeze even without sightseeing, but was just looking to see if there were any highlights (besides the driving and the roads!) enroute.

Well, the recce trip ended up as a five day trip based on the advice provided. Even then, it was a very full five days, so no sightseeing until the last day, and no strawberry farm visits. And after seeing the numbers of dead bodies on the roads, I decided to not push my luck and made sure I was back to base by dusk. There really seems to be a lot of wildlife around.

Also caught up by Beama on his recce, and told to get a move on!

    Hi,

Our targa team has a competition every time we land on the island. The first one to spot a road kill wins! It usually takes around 5 minutes, or 10 in a bad year, usually just outside launceston airport. I feel at home and back in the targa mood once I feel a little animal bumping under the car, and then have to pull some fur out of the dunlop semi-slicks at the end of the day.

Why is there so much road kill in tasmania?? It is like 20x worse than the mainland

    Cheers

    Robbo
