I am in the process of buying a 1987 328. The targa cover is red. Is this original? The owner says he believes it is. I have only seen them in black. The car is black with red seats. Could the cover have been red from the factory. I have to fly out to see the car and I will then be able to see if it looks sprayed red. In the meantime has anyone seen a red cover Thanks
I've never heard of such a thing - one non-conclusive way to check is to see if the press studs have a prancing horse on them
There was never, ever, ever a coloured targa top cover for either the 308/328 in any model! Factory issue was black.........regardless what what colour the car is.........anything else is aftermarket irregardless if the press studs have the prancy horse on them.........they are available seperately. hope this helps, Pete
I would bet that it is the original top that has been painted to match. I have seen several 348s that have had this done. If done right, it matches perfectly and really improves the look. However, as already stated, I don't think a color matching top was ever available from the factory.
Most likely the original cover was sanded smooth of it's texture and painted to match the car. So it IS the "original cover" but the body matched paint is not. Sadly the texture cannot be restored, to my knowledge, and the part has become very expensive. Get used hearing those last six words....
ONLY if he has a Factory Invoice showing the color matching, and I'm skeptical that it was even an option.
Here are your three options and I did all three options: 1st) original Black (satin) 2nd) body color which makes it look a GTB from a distance, which what you have already, or 3rd) the Saratoga Targa top which looks cool but hard to find Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
