I also posted in the off-topic section but I figured it made a lot of sense to post in the Asia section as well. Basically, I'm Headed over to Viet Nam and probably Cambodia and/ or Laos in a couple weeks to meet up with a buddy and just be a tourist. I've been to Thailand but not anywhere else in the area. Last I checked I need a visa for Viet Nam, but that's the only thing that i really know. Anyone have any advise about what to do, see, or maybe more importantly what NOT to do or see? I've heard that Cambodia can be a dangerous place. So anything that any of you guys can offer a regular guy from the mid-west would be greatly appreciated. (i.e. what to see, where to stay, where to eat, or anything!)

    Thanks!

Hi, I haven't been there personally but my immediate family has been there few weeks ago. Vietnam has improved a lot over the years and you can see from the new hotels, roads, crowded streets, beaches, tourists etc. That's if you stay in the city area. Quite safe as well, in fact they felt safer there then in certain parts of Malaysia!

Cambodia has improved quite a fair bit as well & my friend just did an Ang Khor Wat trip around Christmas. Basically, these countries are opening up & tourist dollar is welcomed. My friend even spotted a Cayenne Turbo in HoChiMinh!

I think you can find quite a lot of information from the search engines. Hotels are quite cheap & they have several 5stars there. Laos has been quiet & nobody talks about them. Myanmar is a beautiful place to be in as well. The ancient city Pagan is a must see.

have been in ho chi minh city for the last 2 weeks (I'm from Miami). I've been working most of the time but have had an opportunity to explore a bit. It's a fun place to visit -- your dollar goes very far -- but i wouldn't spend too much time in ho chi minh city. you only need a few days to explore it -- i would spend some time in the north, go south to the mekong delta, etc.

drop me a line (here or PM) if you have any questions

off the top of my head, i strongly recommend that you get your vietnam visa early (it can take a while) and apply for a multiple entry visa (which also takes longer). if you don't have a multiple entry, you won't be able to return if you decide to make a side trip (I wanted to visit Laos and Cambodia last weekend but couldn't b/c I'm single entry)

    good luck

I spent a whole month in Vietnam, in 2003. Started in the north at Hanoi and made our way down south to Ho chi minh city and the mekong delta. Nice place & very interesting:) Have lots of digital photos if anyone wants to see any

I was in Cambodia with my wife and 2 daughters 6 & 13 a few months back. It was safe beautifull and friendly. I can recomend a driver and hotel for angkor wat. Pnom Phen is a bit of an outlaw city but we still felt safe. Can't wait to go back. Take lots and lots of US $1.00 notes Everything cost a dollar and they won't accept torn or wrinkled notes or their own currency. You'll get change in counterfiet US or local notes. When you think of the crap these people have been through, you can cut them some slack, Mike.

I was in VN almost a year ago for a solo 1200-mile bicycle trip from Hanoi to Saigon. There were many things to see and do, Halong Bay is beautiful so is Nha Trang. The roads were bad in many places so I wouldn't take my Ferrari there...
