Well, it's that time of the year... Folks are doing more filing than an Enron secretary, asking for more extensions than an entire hair weave customer base and contemplating suicide more than a would-be Seattle grunge band...

...i just wanna get it over with.

At the top of my W-2 is an advertisement for www.irs.gov where i can use the IRS e-file to file my taxes... There are several companies, through the IRS, that will allow me file my federal return for free - i'll have to pay to file my state return - but i was wondering if anyone's ever used this system before... Am i better off getting a pencil and a calculator and putting my sanity to the test or is this e-file stuff worth my time...?

I used the H&R Block e-filing setup. You get hammered with offers to buy extra services a lot, but other than that, it was really smooth. My refund was in my account in about 2 weeks. I'll never mail in another federal tax return again.

Go figure the APR that the H&R Block fee comes out to for a rapid refund. It will shock you, as that service is a total ripoff, praying on people tyhat can't wait two weeks to get their refund.

About ten years ago, I got cocky with my tax lady. She told me to go to H&R to prove how much money she found for me. I went there and shure enough, the brain-dead, 24 year old kid (Fresh out of college with his degree displayed above his desk) came up about $2800 UNDER what my actual return should have been. That was a $150 well spent for a sanity check!

as stated already....Turbo tax is a great way to go about your taxes! I almost went to H&R Block this year.

I moved to Dallas last March. I own a condo in Chicago that I lived in. I then turned it into a rental. It got kind of complicated, but Turbo tax pulled through! It's amazingly easy to do! I've already filed and I got my returns back almost three weeks ago...I like to get it done way ahead of time....you'll get your money back faster.

If I remember correctly there is a legal service offered at the end of the filing process with Turbo Tax. It is called "Audit Defense". It costs $35.00.

Let it be known, I'm no H&R sympathizer. My tax status is very simple, so I just needed the vehicle that they provided to file my taxes electronically. The IRS also linked to many companies that I'd never heard of, and thought I'd be better off going with a big brand name.
