Ferrari used a long wheel base car this year which in effect acted as a big wing by itself. That gave them an advantage on fast tracks. It was an obstacle on tight circuits like Monaco. Tight circuits really need a short wheel base car. In 2009 there will be 6 "Monacos" on the calendar and it is now generally expected that the top teams will build two different chassis for that year.

How much of a difference between short and long wheel bases are we talking about? Appearently too much to solve it with different pickup points for the suspension?

I bet there are limits defined to that in the rules, but it is probably a bit like the difference we have seen this year between the McLaren and the Ferrari.

People keep highlighting Monaco as a place where Ferrari got dominated. Sure the results look bad, but it was early in the year, when scoring on the podium is considered "good enough" and Hamilton was really pushing Alonso the whole way. We also all know how much Massa hates overtaking cars.

Jackie Stewart commented on it and said he was surprised that in today's times of unlimited resources and professionalism the teams haven't tried this idea already.

Not only this but the aerodynamics will change. This doesn't seem economical, especially to the lower teams.

Couldn't Ferrari start the season or whatever with an "A-spec LWB" F1 car and then go to a "B-spec SWB" F1 car for the short courses and then "revert" to the A-spec car for the long tracks? Surely there isn't a rule that says they have to run the same wheelbase all season... (although, it would seem to double development needs with two chassis specs)

You can use as many chassis as you like. Problem is, that you need to individually crash test each version. In the end it is all a matter of resources and effort, but doable.

The more rules you make, the more it costs to find ways around them :)

Nicely proven by the shift in costs for the 2 race/engine rule: All manufacturers saved a bundle on maintenance and production costs for engines, but at the same time costs on R&D for the engines went through the roof as they now had to make the engine powerful AND reliable.

Back in 1992 you could buy your Renard Formula Atlantic and have a long and short wheel base configuration. The short was for road courses and short ovals and the long wheel base was primarily for large ovals.

I know only one tub was used and I believe they extended the wheelbase by extending out the bell-housing on the transmission. I'm not sure if you had to reposition the rear suspension to different pick-up points but I would think so. Rear bodywork was slightly different. I think the long wheel base option added $10k to the price of the car.

Maybe they could bring back the Tyrell six-wheeler and just leave off the front two wheels for the short tracks?

Sorry, but the thought of Jackie holding forth on chassis design just made me do it.
