I just switched to AT&T for my high speed internet, now using fiber optic instead of cable. With the new service came a new 'box' in my office, a 2WIRE 3800 series. The 2WIRE (2W) has built in wireless, so I know longer need my old Linksys wireless router. I use 2 other computers on my wireless network. Computer 1 is an old Dell laptop with an equally old Dell wireless card. I got that computer set up fast, I found the new network, typed in the network key, and all is well.

Computer 2 is the main family computer, the kids use it for games, I use it for F-chat, etc. It's a Compaq desktop using a Linksys network adapter. I've been using the linksys software to connect to the wireless network with the old router, both were linksys and it was easy. Now, I'm trying to connect my Compaq to the 2W through the linksys software on my Compaq, and I can't make it work.

I do the 'site survey' on the linksys software, and it recognizes the 2W signal. I click 'connect' and it gives me the following choices:

Security: WEP (in a drop down box, it also gives me a choice of WPA-Personal or PSK2)
WEP: 64-but (can also choose from 128-bit)
    Passphrase: -blank-
    WEP Key 1: 00:00:00:00:00

On the 2W box is all the security info. From it, I have:

System password: 10 digit, all numbers
MAC address: starts with 00: then gives me 5 more sets of :xx: for a total of 12 if you include the first 00:
Network Key: another different 10 digit number.

I've plugged every code into every field in every combination I can think of on the Linksys software, and can NOT connect. I know it works, as I'm using the Dell to type this now. The Dell asked for the network key, I keyed in the info from the 2W box that actually said 'Network Key' and it works.

Please help me decipher these different companies vernacular!

Update: I can get the Linksys software to tell me "You're connected to the access point, but the internet can not be found". Linksys adapter is WMP54G.

Double click your wireless icon on the computer and play with the DNS server settings, or you may have to configure one of the two:
A: Gateway IP address on the computer
B: Configure the access point/router with the username/password for the high speed. THat could be the issue, if the router/AP/whatever isnt configured, it has no way to identify itself to the network.

YOu said High Speed...> DSL, Cable, or is it wireless (as in AT&T Wireless, not just the wireless in your house)?

I would try hardcoding in the IP info on the one that is not working. From the one that is working do an ipconfig /all in the command prompt. Then on the one that's not working go to the TCP/IP settings and type in exactly the same numbers from the working computer except for the IP address, change the last number i.e. if it's .3 then make it 192.168.0.4

If that doesn't work try a winsock reset by typing this into the command prompt: netsh winsock reset (if you're using Windoze XP with SP2)

OS is Windoze XP home. Haven't had a chance to try anything yet, and I don't understand why it's a such a problem. The old Dell laptop fired right up.

    Thanks for the pointers.

Oh, and Mark? Butt out. :p I wish I had an accessable copy of that picture you took of me 'communicating' with you.

under the WEP key box, try typing in your network key, which is the password to log on to the network. Wi-Fi set up, should be pretty straight-forward, these days with the new tech, that is emerging, but personally, I suggest you connect up your old Linksys again. If it's a WRT54g, you can use custom firmware (DD-wrt), and you can do so much things with it. 2Wire wireless stuff suck. Linksys makes the good stuff, well, now it's Cisco.

I was thinking the old click on start/run and typing in /ipconfig /release and then /ipconfig /renew

It's been awhile, if you still can't get in I will go dig out a book.

Actually, I had a guy at work that had this same problem, he went into 'networking' and just reconfigured it from scratch, adding the machine to his wireless network, and it worked fine. That was after five days of dinking with it.

MickeyYeety - as far as I know, the firmware you can use is largely dependent on the exact model you have, I have Sveasoft on all of mine.

no problem. Sometimes these companies make the easiest things a nightmare.
