Ok I've put up with it for long enough. The fan on my Vaio laptop will kick on after about 5 mins of use then stay on until the computer is shut down. It makes the bottom incrediably hot and kills the battery life. Ive gone through all the settings but still no luck. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like you have it backwards...your computer is running hot and the fan is there to cool it off!!!!
Make sure there is ventilation space around the back and bottom.

I think your cpu is making the laptop hot, not the fan. The fan is there to move the hot air out of the laptop and suck in fresh air. Make sure you don't have cpu intensive programs running in the backround. If your running windowsxp, right click on the bottom bar and click on task manager. Go to performance and check how much your cpu is getting used. It should be less than 5% if your idle.

Same here, fan kicks in at 40C, and there's no hardware control (it's a Vaio as well).
    Bottom line, you're screwed.

However, you could use compressed air to clean it.

I just got a Vaio desktop because that happened to my laptop. The motherboard ended up getting fractures or something... I don't know enough about computers to tell you he technical aspects, but I know you should probably fix it :)!

Perhaps you've got some kind of malware / spyware / whatever-ware (inadvertantly picked up from the internet) running in the background causing the processor to work harder and generate more heat (and thus the fan thing...)

Patrick, I had a sony vaio laptop and the fan burned out.

The replacement fans are about $80.

Don't try to use a substitute fan with slightly different dimensions, and try to rig it up.

    Ask me how I know.
