Short answer is yes if you don't put the proper safeguards on the setup A PURE modem is too basic to be hacked but a router with modem and wifi can easily be hacked and they are all one device these days
Its the premium Telstra NBN unit. Reason for the question was I have been getting the odd no Id calls and noone answering, but yesterday it ramped up, I spent the day being annoyed 9 times by the "I'm from Telstra technical" scam A Holes. I stopped after the answering the phone after the 3rd call, with no caller ID on the phone but they called incessantly during the day. They claimed hundreds of people are using my IP address and they wanted me to access my IP address. My Guess if they keep targeting one person then they may believe its true. The one this mornings was the best. In the past I have asked for their return number and their Telstra ID and they hang up, to day I got bogus both telephone and ID. it sounded very convincing but I am extremely suspicious due to both media and https://www.staysmartonline.gov.au/ Emails, I followed up with Telstra and sure enough it was all BS. Dare I say this but the Telstra guy was very helpful, tracking are now tracking all IP calls to my home number and I have blocked all international calls for the time being. My main concern is for far less savvy people people as this was so we orchestrated it was nearly convincing.
Telstra only cold call to upsell but they haven't done that for a long time The one that gets me is when they pretend to be from the Telstra technical dept with the information that your IP address is flooding the network and they wany access to your PC to stop the problem. The ONLY time you should EVER let Telstra onto your computer is if YOU instigate the call to tech support and they want to run Teamviewer and even then I would be very careful to make sure you watch EVERYTHING they do while in control Another scam is when they call and say they are from Microsoft support and need access to your PC .... HAHA like M$ support can fix anything I'm very polite and tell them I'm tracking their call as we speak and I will find them and shoot them at which point they hang up very quickly. The old people in my area come around to see me regularly as these people are getting sneakier and scaring the hell out of the older people. I get them to get a callback number and then I call these idiots and really give it to them. I've been to the useless AFP about this but they fob it off saying because it's international they can't do anything The same arseholes that dobbed the drug mules in to the Indonesian authorities when they knew they had the drugs before they left Australia
