SEATTLE, Washington (Reuters) -- A 17 year-old high school student faked the theft of his 2002 BMW M3 in order to collect insurance money to upgrade to a Bentley, police said on Thursday.

The teen, a student of Skyline High School in Sammamish, a suburb of Seattle, had reported the car stolen earlier this week, said Michael Chiu, a spokesman for the police in Bellevue, another suburb located between Seattle and Sammamish.

Police in another town found the $47,000 BMW being stripped and arrested four suspects, who connected the teen to the theft, leading to his arrest.

"That investigation led us to believe that he wanted to upgrade to a Bentley," Chiu said.

Bentleys, featured frequently in U.S. hip-hop videos, have a suggested retail price of $160,000 for the Continental GT coupe and $240,000 for the Arnage sedan.

The BMW was in the name of the teen's mother but was used as his vehicle, Chiu said. The student was released to his mother, and prosecutors are considering charges.

In my opinion, the State of Washington should allow death penalty for something like this....

Any 17 yr old with M3 that is not greatful about what he has should not be allowed to breathe.

In all honesty, would he really be able to pull it off?

Let's say the insurance company ponies up the full $47k for the car (now three years old)... is parting out an E46 M3 really going to cover the other 100k+?

That's doubtful considering the complete body/frame can't be sold/registered, which leaves the drivetrain, interior, and misc bits (maybe 10-15k for all of this) so he's still pretty short in the grand scheme of things. I know more than few people with garages full of S4 & M3 parts that they can't get rid of.

IMHO, giving the 17 year-old the M3 was the beginning of the problem as it skewed his sense of responsibility and only made him lust for bigger and better things that he didn't have to rightfully earn. His limited understanding of insurance companies and law enforcement only reinforces the belief that he lived in Fantasy Land.

    Geez.

All I can say is this kid is an ungrateful bastard.

I already have a deal set up wiht my parents that if I get an athletic scholarship 75% or more payed for, they will buy me an M3. I would never consider even just a little bit selling that car (or trying to scam something using that car) to get something better. M3's are AWSOME I would love nothing more than to have one.

I have a wierd feeling that his parent's will fight hard to keep him out of trouble. [baby talk]Their little prince was just crying for help, and they can't let one bad choice result in a police record for their baby [/baby talk]

Sorry, but for 99% of the kids who get cars like this before they are mature enough to understand the privelege they are blessed with, it always ends up ugly. I hope he gets a hefty fine and several hundred hours of community service (like cleaning up parking lots or washing police cars :))

The greatest punishment this clown could get would be for his parents to not provide him with another car.

M3's are incredible, he was lucky to have one at all let alone at 17. Some people dont know they are born. Ungreatful little worm.

PS on a side note, if I was trading up from an M3, a Bentley GT would be a great choice ;)

The sad thing is that around the DC Metropolitan area, kids have been killing themselves at alarming rates with car crashes. I don't think that a 17 year old should have a M3 to start with. That's a relatively fast and potentially very dangerous car for an inexperienced driver to have. I can remember several young kids in this area killing themselves in 3 series bimmers over the past 10 years. It always ends the same, teddy bears duck taped to a tree/utility pole, grieving students and grievance councelors.

    just a thought

What an amazingly inconsiderate ungrateful little jerk

If I was the Judge I would take away his license until he was 20, make him ride the bus,& do community service for the homeless for years

If they send him to prison he will only learn to be a better thief although getting pounded in the A$$ would probably do him some good too LOL

No license til he's 25 and 1500 hours of community service. At a miniumum. If he slips up on the community service, another 1000 hours. What a jerk.

Let him drive again, but put him behind the wheel of a Ford Pinto, AMC Pacer, Chevy Chevette, or some other such POS. Then make him do extra community service because his vehicle pollutes more.

This makes me sick. I'd love to have a BMW, but I had to pay $1500 for a piece of crap Cavalier. I know I get a lot of satisfaction from buying and maintaining my car, even if it does suck. These snobby rich kids really annoy me. A girl in my high school got a brand new Hyundai, not a great car, but still brand new, and all she does is complain about it. I wish I could see her in fifteen years (preferably less) when I have my brand new Ferrari that I earned myself, and she's still driving a toy that daddy bought her.

I used to live near Skyline highschool, kids up there do stupid things...I remember seeing in the paper that this group of asian kids for a year claimed they were rappers with record deals...they were buying all these rice rocket cars with various engine swaps and unlimited spending... it turned out they had been taking money from their parents life savings. I believe when they were 15 they took 50k each from their parents. Same school as the kid who claimed his M3 was stolen.
