What is the Telaio Group? Who are the members? Do they have a website or message board? Thanks as I've seen reference to this group as few times and assume its a group of Ferrari historians but dont know much more than that. Thanks Doug
It is a very secret society whose membership is by invitation only I was told the initiation ceremony involves tests such as can you disguise your anorak as a ball gown and the production of dissertations related to cars produced prior to the applicant's date of birth The exchange of information apparently involves a variation of the Enigma machine which uses chassis numbers
It is a group of Ferrari 'anoraks' who share a common interest in the minutiae of Ferraris and Ferrari history. It isn't particularly secret or anything but the forum is only accessible to members. Jonathan
They meet on Tuesdays, right after the Rotary Club at Minella's Diner in Wayne, PA. Actually, they hang out here, trolling threads and occasionally sharing their wisdom of the ages with us mere mortals. And an occasional serial number. D
Hi Dave I'm a member of Telaio and I think your summation is a little unfair . I have more than 1200 posts on Fchat and 99% of them are in the general FChat sections, and I know that other Telaio members are also willing to share their knowledge with you 'mere mortals'. Nathan
Now Nathan, You knew, for the most part, that I was just poking a little fun, right? However, there is a certain sense of rarefied air that permeates the Telaio forum. Dave
Cue the "Fight Club" pun's I am thinking the first rule of Telaio Group is you dont mention Telaio group ? Seriously though, I would be interested in any information anyone has regarding Telaio group
These posts pretty much sum it up. Telaio is simply a private group of people who share an interest in tracking and documenting Ferraris by serial number. The group currently communicates with each other by means of a web-based forum, which is hosted (courtesy of the generous Mr. Rob Lay) here on FerrariChat. Access is only available to members. Anyone who sincerely shares the group's (oddball) interests should send a PM to Peter den Biggelaar, Edvar van Daalen, or me. Believe me, if you have only a passing interest in the subject, then Telaio is not for you. If you're interested in Ferraris but are not actually a serial number collector, then you already enjoy the input of the group's members because they openly contribute to the other forums here on FerrariChat daily. The Telaio section is reserved for the exchange of serial number information that would likely bore the Hell out of most of you.
Hi Wayne, Just a small correction, Lars Theunissen is now moderator and he handles new membership applications: http://ferrarichat.com/forum/member.php?u=16984
What a fun thread, it gave me a good laugh on this early Sunday morning. I had no idea that there was such an aura of mystery surrounding Telaio As Peter in the post above already mentioned, I´m the current admin of the group, so I might as well join in and tell you a bit more on Telaio. About 17 years ago, four Dutch Ferrari serial number collectors got together and set up a paper newsletter called Telaio. Two of these foundíng members later lost interest, but Peter den Biggelaar and me are still active. In those very early days, we started to look around at Ferrari-events for people taking down s/ns like us. We would then inform them about the Telaio newsletter, give them a sample copy and invite them to subscribe. Quite quickly, a small, but dedicated group of Ferrari serial number collectors had started to share their lists and information this way. We made four newsletters per year and there were about 20 in total. About five years after the introduction of the Telaio newsletter, one of our Dutch members, Edvar van Daalen, came up with the great idea to switch from a paper quarterly newsletter to an e-mail group. This way, we could exchange information on a daily basis and also share pictures by email. So we proceeded this way, Telaio continued to grow and Edwar became the admin of Telaio. Again some years later, Edvar introduced another innovation and the mailing list was replaced by a members-only forum here on FerrariChat. Many thanks to Rob Lay for generously giving Telaio its new home here Shortly after Telaio´s switch from mailing list to FerrariChat, founding member Peter den Biggelaar took over from Edvar van Daalen to become the new admin of the group. About two, three years ago, other founding member Lars Theunissen (hey, that´s me!) took the admin job over from Peter, which is still the current situation. Telaio has well over 100 members from countries all over the world. In the last years, the member policy has become much more strict, as quality is more important than quantity. Since we would like to see active members who share information on a regular basis, lurkers can and will be banned from Telaio. Aspiring members are required to fill in a form, answering several questions about their interest in Ferrari serial numbers and in what way they would like to contribute to the group. This form is then sent to all other members, who are invited to comment on the new application. The new member will then be accepted or refused, although refusals don´t happen that often. Currently, we welcome about two-three new members a year (that´s not a limit though), which is fine, as also some members will leave Telaio every year. So why is the Telaio group´s forum not open and visible for anyone? Mainly because of the sensitive nature of Ferrari serial number data. After all, we share information about the s/ns, the car details, the plates, the owner´s names and the car´s histories. Many Ferrari owners would be very unhappy to see all their car´s details and their names published on the internet for the whole world to see. While in the USA many Ferrari owners are quite relaxed about such details, owners here in Europe are usually (though not always) much more objecting to things like that. So we respect the privacy of all the owners involved and exchange our s/n-information only within a relatively small group of members that can trust eachother to keep the information within Telaio. As has been written by several Telaio members above my post, virtually all Telaio members are active on the rest of FerrariChat too. We have helped out a lot of owners with histories on their cars for example, which is always a very enjoyable thing to do. Actually Telaio members are all over FerrariChat, posting and sharing comments and pictures and participating in discussions. Definitely not a secret and elite society Well, I hope I´ve been able to answer most of your questions on what Telaio is and what we do (and why we do it in the "members only" way). If you have any other questions, please feel free to either post them here or to send me a pm. Please note I´ll personally be offline for the next 2,5 weeks (as of tomorrow), so a reply from me might take some time. But otherwise surely another Telaio member will gladly join in to respond, as many members have already done in this thread Ciao, Lars
It's interesting that you want information about the Telaio group, but you don't even show your name in your profile. How come? Nathan
Hi Telaio Group, i was unaware such a group existed until i saw this thread! Given you must have a huge data base of chassis, engine and internal engine numbers, is it possible you have any information to help solve my mystery..... I own a 1965 275GTB Short-nose Chassis No. 07333, there is a well documented restoration thread here on FChat. My car went through most of its later life, falsely portrayed as a matching number car: Chassis and Engine both appearing as 07333. But it transpired that the engine, although stamped 07333 was in fact another 275GTB engine, originally leaving the factory stamped 07237 (internal number 398/64). This engine has since been sent back to the factory in Maranello, where Ferrari restamped the engine block with its correct original number 07237, amended the records for the car, and certified the engine as a correct original 275 GTB type 213. I have locate and am in touch with the owner of the 275GTB with the chassis number 07237 and he is fully aware I have the original engine for his car. We have confirmed from the internal numbers that the current engine in his car is NOT mine 07333. I am trying to find the correct matching number engine for my car 07333 - any thoughts? Any help or additional info on the car would be greatfully appreciated. regards Mark
Hi Mark, Thank you for your post - I have copied your request for information to the Telaio section, as not all our members might have looked here and found your post. Every member keeps his own database and part of us specialize only on certain models or eras. If no other member might be able to answer your question, the best would be to contact the world´s largest expert on the classic Ferraris, Marcel Massini at: [email protected] Best regards, Lars
Oops, just noticed a spelling mistake in my post! Edwar should of course be Edvar - sorry Edvar! Ciao, Lars T.
Oh yes, we seem to be quite notorious, almost as secret as the freemasons (would that make me a Grand Master instead of an admin then?) Ciao, Lars
Hi Mark, Just to make sure: have you contacted Michael Sheehan about this? He sold the car back in 2004 and as he's quite good in collecting information about the cars he has for sale, he might know a bit more about it. For example shops where a switch might have taken place. See also: http://www.ferraris-online.com/pages/cardetail.php?reqcardir=FE-275GTB-07333
Hi Edvar, yes i have been in touch with Michael previously and many of the other owners and dealers involved with the car. Unfortunately nothing leading to the where-a-bouts of the original engine 07333. This is the ownership history i have: > 1st owner: May 1965 - 1981 - Willy-Peter Daetwyler > then on consignment with Bruce Craig Lavachek or was he an owner? > 2nd owner: 1981 - 1983 - Bill Locke > then on consignment with Nostalgia Cars - Not sold > then on consignment with Rittermark Porsche > 3rd owner: 1983 - 2004 - Henry E Payne III > then on consignment with Michael Sheehan > 4th owner: 2004 - 2009 - Scott Stupay > then on consignment with Autosport Designs - Not sold > then entered in The RM Auction, Monetery > 5th owner: 2009 - present -myself Mark McCracken
