I've heard that St. Charles is a nice place to spend a day and it is close by. I have been there before and thought it was very scenic, but was there to spend time with my parents and don't remember much of it. Can anybody tell me what there is to do there?

I thought I'd like to take my GF for the day, but is it mainly just shopping and restaurants? I'm looking for something that wouldn't cost a lot of money to enjoy.

    Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Downtown St. Charles is some shopping but mostly bars and food. Y ou may also want to consider Geneva which is set up a little better for strolling, window looking and restaurants.

St. Charles is nice, but if you're looking for a nice area to walk around, Geneva is your best bet as stated above. There's plenty of places to eat along Roosevelt Road and then you can hit 3rd street for some shopping. Don't forget to stop at Graham's Chocolates on 3rd Street! You can thank me later for telling you to go there!

Naperville is a quaint town, and interesting. There's the 'Naperville Settlement' that's an outdoor museum that takes you back to the 18th and 19th centuries. Kind of a small version of Williamsburg Va. and some nice restaurants are near by.

St. Charles is a very nice town on the river. The "Arcada" theater is absolutely beautiful inside, although unfortunately they stopped showing movies a few years ago and went to "theater" only. http://www.thearcada.com/ It has a "Spanish Revival" style, is very ornate, has a full wrap-around balcony, and has the old-fashioned pipe organ that rises from the orchestra pit for performances.

There used to be a nice bar around the corner from there called "Scotland Yard" that served full yard beers (remember the three foot long bulb glasses with wooden stands you drank out of in college?) and had some pretty decent pub food. I'm not sure if it's still there though. According to a brief internet search Scotland Yard is still there.

A resident of St Charles I know suggested an Italian Restaurant that they love: http://www.miafrancesca.com/ It's supposed to be pretty darn good, and a local favorite.

Also, the Kane County Fairgrounds is in St. Charles, and it's got one of the best flea markets you'll ever go to if you're into good deals on antique furniture. Seriously, my dining set and a few other pieces were bought at that "flea market", and the wife an I used to go there every once in a while during our college years. http://www.kanecountyfair.com/

Nearby Geneva, IL is also a great place to check out. The wife an I used to take an annual Christmas shopping trip there in the Fall, as the town in the Fall is absolutely beautiful. They also have a surprisingly good concours d'elegance car show that will shock you as to what shows up: http://genevaconcours.net/

Go check out St Charles and Geneva! They are great towns to visit, and there are a lot of nice roads around there for fun in a sports car.

I strongly second the above comment about the Geneva Concours. This is easily the best annual formal car show in the Chicago area in my humble opinion. I'd plan your trip around when the show will be held.
