I noticed yesterday that while it is still relatively cold outside (50 degrees) that my temperture gauge hardly moves at all. I drove the car for at least a couple of hours and approximately 100 miles. (got my new upsized tires Bridgestone Potenza 750's) My oil gauges were fine. Any ideas on what I might check to fix the problem? Is there a temperature sending unit? Where is it located?

    Thanks,
    Al

Some of my gauges require some tapping to start operating, but my car is 11 years older than yours.

    Al,

The temp sending unit is located under the plenum. Does your temp rise if you let the car sit and idle? Sometimes the connectors at the temp sending unit can get crudded up. It is located in a harse environment. I had the opposite problem where my temp gauge was showing 225 F but the engine and radiator temp was 185F, verified by infrared temp gun. After replacing the two pole switch at the radiator, expansion tank cap, thermostat, and temp sending unit without success I removed the dash and cleaned the connectors on the back of the gauge and that ultimately fixed my problem.

    Good Luck,

    Dan

Many have reported unusually slow temp rise. A couple of posts indicated that the thermostat gets sticky or lazy, that is not returning to fully closed, or is just stuck open. Ferari thermostats are not cheap and i am still not sure if the "it will fit" thermostats do a proper job.

Considering the likely age, (20-30 years) this might be a good choice, as these items are less reliable than the gauges or senders.

    Keep inquiring,
    chris

If you mean the coolant guage does not move upward during cold weather while driving, it MIGHT be the thermostat. Mine failed (stayed open) but even in 0F temps the guage did move to about 65C to 70C as i recall. Thermostat for the 3x8 is cheap ($30 including gasket) and easy to change, try www.superperformance.co.uk

Thanks for the information. I'm going to check the connections before I order a new thermostat. Of course I'm going to have to try and figure out what a "plenum" is first! -thanks Dan.
