    Hi!

My son left the gas cap at the gas station this afternoon. Of course, I called and the attendant couldn’t find it a few hours later.

I’ve ordered a replacement cap, but it will be a week or two before it shows (holiday week here in the US) and I was planning on taking a road trip in a few days with the car.

Is there a suitable temporary gas cap solution? Monday is a holiday and was hoping to travel then, so I’m assuming the dealership won’t be open (and probably won’t have a compatible gas cap just sitting around). Will any universal one “work” well enough for a 500-mile round trip?

There's always duct tape. The gas station should have cameras and could likely figure out who picked it up.

    I’ve already ordered a replacement.

Fun fact: the cap from my daughter’s 2010 Mini Cooper S fits like a glove, so I ordered a replacement from Amazon to tide me over until the correct one arrives.

Make sure you install the new one with this, so the cap stays with the car

Yes! I ordered the cap and retainer strap as a set. It was missing when I bought mine and didn’t even know it was supposed to be there (I’ve had other cars where it didn’t have the strap so I didn’t think anything of it at the time).
