This really leaves a bitter taste in your mouth, especially when it is close to home (Greenville, SC), and even if you don't know them. How the hell do you deal with something like that? Four in one family, and five in another..just gone.

And to top if off, a man we met, and sat in his plane with was killed in Alaska just a few days before with his fiancee and the pilot. I was told by a friend that he was skeptical of flying with the pilot as he had flown with him on other occasions, and had taken the controls from him several times on past trips. Second hand info but that's what I was told. There is no recovering now. Turns out they were flying ahead with a 19 plane tour to scout out the weather in a mountain pass. Sad, sad, sad....

The weather up there is almost always terrible. You need either a slow flying bush plane that will land anywhere, or a jet. Anything in between is no good. Too much rain, fog, and ice.

Do you know what make/model they were flying in? I didn't see it in the article.

It was a single turboprop Otter-- Garret 331 powered, I believe.

That's an odd accident-- Soldotna is hardly the bush (I've landed there in a jet!), the weather was good, and the pilot was experienced.

It's interesting that there were no eyewitnesses to the crash.

Just got back from funeral. Melet was my best friend and Angela and I were Olivia's godparents. We are truly devastated over the loss of the Antonakos' family

Don, I am so sorry, and so crestfallen by your post it brings tears to my eyes. I am not a good enough man of faith to endure such a thing. This is one area I know I am lacking. How do you make sense of it?

I am still in a state of shock and denial. You always hear stories of tragedies like this and other tragic events and never realize that one day it may be family or friends of yours. Melet and his family were very close in their relationship with each other and their relationship with God. I know in my heart that God has a plan for their lives. So, I have to trust in my faith that there is a higher purpose for their lives and remember the wonderful times we had together
