    Hello,

I got a chance to drive a non cat 78 308 GTB today, down in orange county. The car was mechanically very sound, with a new suspension, as well as a new Kevlar clutch. Cosmetically it needed some work; paint, interior, the normal stuff. I was very impressed with the brakes, I have to tell you-Ferrari put some awesome anchors on the 3x8 cars! The car also had a Tubi exhaust, though it sounded pretty close to the stock 85 3x8 QV that my friend owns, outside of the induction growl from the carburetors. You can definitely feel the difference, and how the Ferrari 3x8 series progressed from the their inception with a carbureted 2V, to the injected 2V, and the injected 4v (QV), and even on to the 328. The guy who's buying the car now knows exactly what he's getting. The broker also had a 74 Dino in great condition for $220,000. Wow that's a lot of money. Anyway, there was also a mint condition low mileage 430 F1 gearbox with low miles for $115,000-some lucky person is going to steal that car. Excellent price. And now the dust has settled for me down the line its no 355 for me. I'm going right to the 430. My mind is finally made up between those two machines, but a 512 TR is still in the running...

Really I mean no offense- I just always wonder why a few guys on every online forum do this sort of text-message style.

    Just curious.

What I was wondering about is how one has a 78 GTB in California *without* cats??? The car originally came with them. I thought CA was serious when it came to emissions.

Cats were removed recently from what I can tell and the car cannot be sold in CA, I am the person buying it and I am more then tickled. I have wanted a 308 GTB for awhile and carbed is my first choice.

The cosmetics will be fixed in due time with a full rip down and proper job, but for the time being Brett drove it for me and it will undergo PPI on Wednesday with possession set for Friday next assuming no issues.

as for the,,between,,each,,word i have seen it many times over the past years from BBS to irc to text messages, it is what it is.

Thanks again Brett for taking her around hte block and putting her through the paces

The car you drove must have had a brake upgrade done, because as much as I love my 308, they don't exactly have a reputation for their braking prowess.

I would pick the Scud over a base 430. Beside that it's interesting to see someone out shopping for a $20K 308 and end up with a $100K 430. Good luck.

    Brett,

Good luck with the car. Sorry you decided not to by my '77 but I hope this will work out well for you. Is it the red one for sale on FAds?

Completely agree. The 308 has those tiny pads, 2 piston calipers and smallish rotors. My '75 Corvette (stock brakes) will put me through the windshield but it has bigger pads, 4 piston calipers and 12" rotors.

You obviously have not driven a stock GT4 and early carb 308. To make it stop better, you have to stick you feet through the floor and act like Fred Flinstone. Even my ABS 328 brakes do not exactly instill confidence in its stopping distance.

Now, Porsche, they know how to spec brakes.

the brakes on my 89 328 are the first thing i noticed when i bought the car,,,and they work so good...that stopping the car from 100 MPH happens in no time,,with the upmost confidence...the feel i get from the pedal is incredible,,i drive with my socks on and pressing on the pedal to stop is easy,,,the 308 i drove yesterday with my socks on .,had a very good feel when depressing the brakes,,,now mind you,,i wasnt going 100 MPH,,,,,but on the drive,,the pedal felt the same as in my 328,,,,the 308 pedal was all the way at the top and didnt seem to me like you had to push it through the floor board to stop the car, felt like the pads were probably new,,,,maybe even the rotors,,,and the pads might have been ceramic,,which work much better than semi metalic,,,but you cant change them without turning the rotors due to warping...at least thats how my truck is,,,so anyways,,,the fellow is getting a PPI asap,,,all i did was drive it and give my feedback,,,my 328 has 88k miles,,and im still on the factory rotors..maybe all the car had was new pads.,..i think the 328 has 2 piston calipers as well...and the rotors look pretty small to me,,,,i cant imagine a 308 s rotors being any smaller than mine,,,but they might be,,,happy Forth of July fellows,,,,,im off to the beach,,,,

You guys might want to try some better pads.

I will overheat my brakes eventually but the stopping power is incredible.

I've posted this before ... this is stock brakes with Porterfield R4 pads. I'm basically at redline in 4th gear when I slam the binders on at the end of the straightaway. That first conrner is probably 30-40 mph.

Until the brakes get hot I really don't get out braked by anything unless it's a full on race car. You only have as much deceleration as your tires have grip and if you can lock up the tires you have enough braking force. I had pretty fresh road race Hoosiers at this event so I had a lot of grip to play with under braking ... again ... it's the heat I have issues with. I can't imagine a guy on the street having serious issues if he's got the right pads and everything is working properly.
