Test Drove a BB512i this past week

    I test drove a 1983 BB512i this past week. The car had 20K miles and a recent 30K mile major service. The car was very dirty inside and out (left outside and not washed), and I was surprised at how dirty the interior was. Everything needed a good cleaning. With that said, the car needed a new front spoiler (current spoiler is smashed from hitting something) and the rear deck needed to be redone (needs new paint - accident or poor maintenance?). Overall, I was disappointed with the car, however, it may become a very nice car if it checked out and you dumped some $$$$ into it - I do not know

    The car started immediately and sounded great. It had the stock muffler but no cats. After letting the car sit for about 15 minutes I started my 1 1/2 hour drive. Around the city it drove fine. Neither the clutch or the steering were too heavy. Visibility was great. The quality of the ride was also excellent. I am 6'3" 200 pounds and found the driving position to be very comfortable. While the angle of the seat was raked back much more than in my 308QV, it worked well for me (so I am weird).

    Once on the highway I was able to open up the car and see what it could do. The car had lots of low end torque (something I wish my 308 had) and pulled hard from 2RPM to redline. This is was a pleasant treat since I have to hit 5K rpm or more for any type of power in the 308. At 60 mph the car was bored. At 80 mph it was barely breaking a sweat. At 100 mph it started to feel really good and asked for more, however, the wiper started to dance around the windshield (is this normal? Does not do much to instill confidence when driving at 100+ mph). I was able to hit 130 mph several times without a problem, but upcoming traffic prevented higher speeds. While the car was rock solid at 130 mph, I was hoping to see how stable the car was at above 150 mph since others have commented that the car becomes a little light and unstable at this speed. While I did not push the braking ability of the car, the brakes seemed to be very good.

    Overall, I was a little disappointed with the Boxer and this car in particular. The Boxer did not accelerate as fast as I would have liked. On the other hand, it does appear to have an endless supply of power. It just keeps going and going. On the plus side, the acceleration and the power of the Boxer was perfect for me. It was not too fast or dangerous. And the torque curve appeared to be flat (which is a good thing). (I think my disappointment is because I am trying to justify the car being worth $40K more than my 308 and I did not think it was. In reality, I should just measure the quality of the Boxer and not compare it my 308 in a dollars and cents issue.) My one big disapointment was once the car hit 6K rpm it sounded great, but under 6K rpm it did not sound as good as I would have liked. With the two cats missing, I would have thought the car flat 12 would have roared under acceleration. If the car roared, I did not hear it inside. The sound was too muted for my tastes. Perhaps a racing exhaust system would wake up the car some.

    While this particular Boxer was not for me (I would want a better example of a Boxer and this car had several issues I experienced), I would like to find a nice example. Problem is I came away missing my 308QV (again, I am weird). Maybe the simple solution would be to own both a 308QV and a Boxer, but they are too similar to own together IMO. Better to have a mid engine and front engine IMO to balance the collection.

    I would love to hear comments from any Boxer owners. Thanks for reading my small review.

    You either love it or hate it. It depends what you expect and sounds like in your mind you were expecting a perfect rocketship with all the whistles and sirens.One needs to explore realistic expectations and accept the car for what it is - definatly not a all around super car.I love the Boxer for what it is ,
    An excellent execution of Italian design - both mechanicaly and exterior body.The heritage is there and built with latest technology back then .Some owners put power and excelleration first and seems each Boxer drives differently depending on usage from previous owners.If power is what you are looking for there are alot more cars out there that will make you happy at a cheaper price.

    FYI Boxers never had cats. Earlier BBs were light at speed in the front. The BBI airdam cured this problem. Yes wiper does dance above 120 but car sits beautifuly on the road up to 170.

    I do not have alot of experience with F cars. As far as the Boxer and Ferrari's ? - It is the last of the handbuilts. I think it really has a special niche. Those 1970's curves are spectacular. I like the less refined nature of the car. As far as value ? Wow ! It offers so much for so little. - In comparison to other similiar vehicles, in its class and in the immediate previous era.

    You have also expressed interest in a Countach. Yes the QV C/T will have more power. Of course the QV is a later model. - They are both a thrill to drive.

    I am not looking for pure power and acceleration. If this was the case I would buy a Viper. I was just expecting the Boxer to be faster in terms of acceleration. Perhaps the car was faster than I realized, but I was expecting more drama in terms of acceleration. Was I surprised that the Boxer did not have more acceleration? Yes. Was I disappointed? No.

    Not too many drivers who have had the chance behind the wheel of the Boxer feels there is not enough drama! Mabey the car you drove was very underpowered ?Please drive more examples.

    I think the car might have been faster than you realize. Also, if you are coming from modern high performance cars, the fact is a Boxer isn't that quick.

    Still, the Boxer is pretty damn cool, and I love the feeling I get driving it! For that matter, I enjoy just looking at it in the garage.

    My perspective, this Boxer may have not been running on all 12 cylinders, they can have a miss and they are so smooth you will not know it but it makes a big diff in performance, I agree with others this one may have issues regarding its running condition hampering performance, a good running Boxer is no comparison to a 308, Frank P made a comment how his BBi pulled away from a 355 above 60.

    Carbed Boxers are quite faster due to a few hundered pounds less weight and hotter cams and instant throttle response up and down like revving carbed motorcycle.

    My Boxer is loud, much louder than my 328 that is catless, I've driven 308QVs and my 328 is much faster, the Boxer is much faster than my 328 once past 30 mph, Boxers do have a very tall 1st gear so low end pick up is about the same till 30 but after that you are hitting 55 mph at redline in 1st and 80 in second things are moveing fast, at least as fast as my 370hp modded 930.

    I agree with atheyg, it sounds like the BBi you looked at has more problems then what is initially apparent. From experience, the Boxer is faster above 50 mph than the F355 and the engine sound track is unmatched.

    One other comment you made about missing your QV if you bought a Boxer, I was enthralled with my 328 the way it drives and sounds but after getting the Boxer it totally blew it away in every aspect of driving experience and sounds,the 328 felt very heavy and numb compared to it even though the weights are similar, the Boxers torque makes it feel lighter and the weight is concentrated in it behind you vs the 328 its spread out through the car,
    I didn't even want to drive the 328 anymore but since the Boxer has been in the paint shop for over 3 months I am appreciating it again to have a Ferrari to drive.

    Something had to be wrong with the Boxer you drove. A good Boxer will blow a 308 into the weeds! And, since a Boxer is not cammy, its power is deceiving and you find yourself going much faster than you realize . I have Ansa Sports exhaust on mine and it sounds great from idle to redline. Drive a few more and I think you will find some differences from the one you drove.

    The car did run strong and just had a 30K major, so I will ASSUME that it was running good. As Mr. Parker stated, the car was not cammy (unlike my 308), so its speed and power can be deceiving. My best guess was that 0-60 was in the high 5's and 0-100 was well under 14 seconds, so the numbers seem to be about right. Then again, I did not abuse the car since it was not mine. I guess I was expecting more g force during acceleration (like a muscle car), but this is just the nature of the beast from what I am being told. I will drive more Boxers soon and report my findings. Despite my view point as to the power of the Boxer, this particular car would have blown my 308QV away in any type of race.

    One thing I did forget to mention is that I really liked the large orange tach and speedo. Unlike the tach and speedo in my 308QV which his hard to see, the Boxer instruments were very easy to see at all times. I really liked that feature.

    I went from a modded 91 vette to a Boxer, without passing through a 308. I test drove a 328 and after the American iron it had no go. The boxer if setup properly will pull as strongly as my 70 vette in low gears and just moves after that. I would say you should feel a strongly noticeable increase in pull after 4000 revs. Fist gear from 15 or 20 mph should snap your head back leaving little time to think before finding second. Fourth gear should get manic at 4500 rpms and increse pace to about 6700 or about 140.

    Do not believe that a recent service meant the car was running well. Boxers are very sensitive and most are not setup properly, many ferrari techs dont have the time to really fiddle the balance between banks and set mixtures exactly. Lastly if the car was as you seem to describe I would bet mixture had a CO of 3 and the distributor was probably frozen, a fairly common problem. My car after its first engine out service at a ferrari dealer would pull up to high speed but was basicaly flaccid, the list of things wrong was quite amazing, from frozen advance, bad plug wires, pooly set mixture etc. Once sorted by someone who knew what they were doing at a different dealer it was back to its old rude self.

    While a Boxer struggles to do 0-60 in the mid 5 second range this is related to time spent on the ferrari box going from 1st to second rather than power.

    I agree with the comments, that Boxer was probably not running optimally.

    Most likely the distributor advance is frozen up. It makes a huge difference at the upper rpm range when it's working properly. The timing is supposed to fully advance at 5K rpm.

    You should be able to really -FEEL- the power dramatically increase at 5K rpm and continue to rise all the way to redline.

    When Boxers are set up right and running well, they are -SCARY FAST- when redlining third, fourth and then into fifth (if there's any room ahead left on the road).

    Ask me how I know.... ;)

    It sounds as if the car I drove was not running 100%. Now I am really interested in driving a properly serviced and running Boxer. Is there anyone in the Philly area with a Boxer that wants to show me what a properly running Boxer can do?

    The 365BBs are 3.30:1

    The carb & injected 512s both have the same ratio, which is 3.21:1

    For all boxer owners whose Wiper dances in the wind....That Single wide arm of the wiper and the slightly narrower arm actually act as spring steel,...Remove entire assembly and bounce it over your Knee to get a slight bend, or bow to create more pressure on the wiper blade itself...when I got this boxer #49473..the last 3 inches of the rubber were not even touching the glass. afterwards it sat in total contact at speed.
    after owning Ferrari's for 25 years, you learn all the tricks!

    At that speed You should Remove the wiper entirely along with any incriminating evidence, such as the crack pipe...

    Michael - I believe there is an easier way to adjust the wiper blade. If you look carefully at the two shafts that support the main wiper and the small wiper, you will notice an asymmetric (angled) washer on both. By loosening the nut under the shaft, you can rotate the washer to adjust the geometry of the wiper contact with the windshield. This is designed to adjust the contact pressure on the windshield.
