The problem is that the 458 doesn't even sound that great to begin with. I find the sound from my Speciale lack lustre. Sure, i have warmed and gotten used to it, but i never had the instant wow when I first drove the 458 Italia during a test drive. I thot my prev E92 M3 with perf exhaust sounded way better esp the induction. Not as loud, but certainly melodious!
488 overtake from outside. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1pRKg3H-f4 Compared to 458 overtake https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGh2Ig17fuE
In the above video's , did you notice the 458 was at speed, at high RPM whereas the 488GTB was low in the RPM range? I need to get a pair together and go create a side by side video ;-) S
And all those championing the sound of the 458 never mention that horrible on/off thing it's got going on at about 3K. Quiet, quiet, qui...LOUD!!! Very annoying.
I'm sure the 488 is quite a bit faster than the 458 but at the levels we are talking, it's not the speed that's important but the feel and sensation. When I drive my 458 I never think come on, go faster!! It's more like, plant the foot..1...2...hang on tight...3..4. ok brake brake going way to fast. Whereas, in my Bentley GT, I plant the foot and after a few seconds of acceleration am left thinking "that's it?...". The 458 just has such a tremendous sense of feel and involvement from the noise to the vibration to the speed it's just all there. With that said, I haven't driven a 488 and to all those who are going to order one I'm sure it will be fantastic. Enjoy them well and drive em hard!
Yes, that's extremely annoying. Feels almost artificial and bothersome. I find myself trying to drive ard it often.
I say that because all you do is make claims against turbo cars and crap all over the 488 which is a superior car to the 458 besides the sound and I think its funny how everytime turbo is mentioned, here you come crapping all over it. Not like other people have not noticed and said something too lol. If you take what I say personal, it is my appologies. This is a forum where we can have fun going back and forth. Do not take what I say personal, I'm just having fun.
If you think turbocharged is superior, go get one. I never asked you not to get one. Have you read the title of the thread, it's about a guy who canceled the turbocharged because he thought the NA was better. So if you want all the sweet words about turbo, don't go to this thread. Let me be clear once again, turbo is not only about lame sound, but it's also the cheapest way to gain power. Well, first model needs investment though, but after that, every successor will be just extra boost, this is Audi's stuff. You can go to 488 picture thread, and exchange poems with people who love 488 (I won't be there). But don't get stress here if people don't want to follow your way of thinking.
Open the valve permanently. F dealer would do it for you free of charge. The most significant would be up to 3,000 rpm, no matter which mode you are in.
My '13 458 Italia sounded a lot better than my Speciale. Agree. But, add an exhaust and we move on. The Italia sounds WORLDS better than the 488.
458 at speed lol http://youtu.be/sqQyUgTQ_sY Cars: 2013 Ferrari 458 Spider (Daily Driver) Ordered 2016 Evora 400
Not everyone of us has that luxury of changing to an aftermarket exhaust. Where I am, the dealer absolutely forbids it because Ferrari Fareast demands it!
Are you talking about the exhaust valves opening and closing ? Thats why you buy a remote valve controller if I am understanding you correctly. My valves are open from cold start until I feel like closing them and letting the ecu control for quiet highway cruising in seventh gear under 4K. You can also pull the vacuum lines and leave them open all the time.
Funny! I have installed such a remote controller in my Scuderia. Two things when the valves are open: 99% of the pedestrians at the roadside show me the middle finger and latest after five minutes I have a headache because of this terrible din. It is quite interesting how the sound from the 458 will be glorified suddenly. You can like the high engine speed concept of this car, but the sound (considered over the entire speed range !!, not only above 7000 rpms) has never been a revelation. The entire theater only to bash the 488, the evil evil turbo-devil!
Wow, tough crowd in Switzerland. I drive the Scud all the time with the valves open (have a remote valve opener) and get thumbs up. Ditto for the 12 Italia, Speciale and now in the SA. I agree though that the drone can be a bit much after awhile....but I do like the sound of the engine much more with the valves open than closed. I haven't had the pleasure of driving the 488 yet but I bet it's a rocket.
The 488 also does the same, where it's quiet and then the exhaust valves open and make the sound louder. Although in this case, the sound is still muted from the turbos.
I got many thumbs up. It's not louder than buses or trucks, do pedestrians in where you live also give middle finger to buses and trucks? It's not only the 458, but also 430, Scud, 360, CS, even Porsche's GT3 are glorified since Ferrari launched the 488.
Compared to the 458, the handling is better, the transmission is smoother. However, the extra power isn't really noticeable for driving on the street. 0-60 on the street, I couldn't feel the .2 second difference. On track, I'm sure the extra power makes a huge difference. 50-120 I'm sure the 488 would feel a lot quicker.
Maybe true In terms of 0-60 times but the torque is certainly obvious I bet. It's why my tesla 90d feels faster than my 911TTS even though it's slower 0-60. (2.8s versus 2.6s)
