So after almost 9 years with the 328, I am finally getting old enough that I'd rather hear the music than the engine. I pulled the cat a while back for fire safety reasons, and am running a test pipe. I have given some thought to having the old cat flanges attached to a short muffler and adding it to the existing system in place of the test pipe. Anyone run anything like this?
not really another muffler, but i grafted some cats onto a spare set of testpipes I had. This was on a carby 308 and there wasnt much room to fit anything bigger than these small cats.. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I have 3 CDs I listen to while driving the 328: Paganini Caprices, KISS and AC/DC. These all work well with the engine noise.
You can hear Paganini caprices at cruise? Must be a darned good system! A Cat would act somewhat as a muffler and won't have any effect on power at all. Of course, a turbo system would also reduce exh noise AND make a lot of power..
I need to find a test pipe - my car is smog exempt as of next year!! Any specific brand/model you would recommend? (this for a Mondial , btw)
i would recommend the LARINI TEST PIPE....it has the sensor fittings...and a really nice stainless finish...it bolted right on no problem its a nice piece...and my car is runnning 18 degrees cooler!!...my car came with a nice stereo set up that im still using today,,,alpine 3 cd changer,,,kenwood amp thats mounted to a custom tray thats in place of the spare tire, 5 inch as well as 4 inch speakers in the doors and the dash tweeters,,,i can dial in just the right amount of motor music as well as Rush / Allman Bros /Eagles Steely Dan/ Van Halen,,,well you get the picture,,,im looking to install a Bazooka Tube to sit between the seats with a jack so i can disconnect it whenever i want,,,,i hope this will help with listoning while driving with the top off.,,,,,
But I thought the engine/test pipe exhaust sound of the 308/328 is the music? Well at least to my ear it it is.
YEP. No stereo in my car at all. Speakers are in the doors but they look SHOT. I don't care and I wll not replace them.
Mine had a cat and a custom straight pipe on it from California. I had the factory Ansa muffler put on during the major, never hearing the straight pipe.( factory Ansa came with the car) . One weekend I added a test pipe, got all froggy and put on the straight pie.... HOLY CRAP what a wonderful sound! Not "too loud" but man it sounds like a Ferrari. Seems to have more torque too, by the butt dyno. Love it now. the folding face Kenwood does not work.... took it out.
Check with ANSA Tillman they have modern high flow cats, maybe Hyperflows I don't recall.... A Cat obviously DOES offer some noise dampening inherently.... Sorry to hear, about the "age" thing.......
The Tubi on my car was way too loud with test pipes only. In spring '08, James P. at Norwood replaced them with small mufflers fitted with flanges at the ends. These cut the noise level by about 30%. This was fine for the last three years but now I'd like quiet it down some more without losing the tonal quality.
