How can I eliminate rattles on the decklid? I notice them with the aluminum slats on their supports but also the mesh sections too. Last year I repaired the stress cracked engine cover brace and strengthen it. So the decklid was flexing more than it should have; loosening everything up. Now at least the engine cover is solid.
If you are speaking of the cross brace at the front of the big fiberglass piece, those fracturing and breaking was quite common. As far as rattles, in my experience most do, at least when closing the lid. I have never heard any rattling while driving though.
Yeah, that was the cross brace I repaired. I saddled it with steel going across those stressed areas. The improvement is hidden too. I can actually hear it when driving; I love having the windows down. It doesn't rattle constantly. Just with the right bump in the road and enough structures to bounce the sound back to me. I noticed my car has a malleable black material around the mesh sections. Brian, does your car have this? I don't know what it is but I was figuring I could use this where pieces meet.
When I replaced a damaged deck lid vent, I noticed a dark colored AC putty was used sparingly in a few areas on underside of vent. I also noted that putty was used on the 2 long skinny vents. I have no idea if that was original or added later but it appears to me that the intent was to prevent rattle. I could not see it until the parts were taken off as it was underneath the vent where it would touch. Maybe someone else can comment if this is one off or normal factory assembly technique. Nothing rattles though.
Just an update to close this thread. I bought: E/Fusing 900 – Moldable Silicone Putty (black) And put very little in each contact point. It took care of the problem. When closing, the decklid sounds solid. It is discreet and works.
Hi Jeff. Is there any chance that you could post some pictures of your repair and of the areas where you applied the putty? Thank you.
Thanks for sharing, glad you found a good dark color putty to use. The good news is you can’t see it and it is removable if needed.
I also would appreciate a picture of where to apply putty. I have the same issue and haven’t been able to identify anything loose. Thanks again.
