Hello, I am interested in replacing the exhaust on a stock 1987 testarossa. I am interested in the x-ost muffler back system, but am slightly confused as to whether the hyper flow cats or test pipes or pre-cats will be worth the investement if I am going for purely sound, and not so worried about a performance increase. How much of a difference in sound will I notice by just switching to test pipes vs. stock cats? Also for switching the pre-cats? Lastly, is engine removal required for any of the above replacements?
Thanks in advance for your help.

My 2 cents on some possible US TR exhaust configurations:

    I. Precats + cats + stock US silencer = very quiet except at high RPM

II. Precats + cats + aftermarket silencer (e.g., Tubi, X-ost, etc.) = quiet except at high RPM

III. Precat bypass + cats + aftermarket silencer = moderate at low RPM and loud at high RPM

IV. Precats + cat bypass + aftermarket silencer = makes poor engineering sense -- better to use configuration III.

    V. Precat bypass + cat bypass + aftermarket silencer = loud at low RPM and very loud at high RPM.

    VI. B. Badurski's minimalist system = crazy loud ;)

Engine removal is not required to change the exhaust system components, but the body panel and louvres below the exhaust tips must be removed (15~20 small bolts IIRC).

Don't know if they'd be any less expensive nor available anymore ;), but F also makes insulated precat bypass pipes -- configuration III (with the F precat bypass pipes) and VI shown below:

When I had my TR I did the Tubi/Hyperflow and replaced the Pre cats with a straight pipe it was OK but nothing like a 355 or 360 with Tubi and Hyperflows.

    I have that exact setup!

Pre cats gone, Hyperflow cats, and x-ost muffler........sounds great!
