There may, or may not, be an easily removable access panel under the carpet on the LH (US driver's) side (rather than removing the front turn signal light assembly) -- let us know if you have one:

Guys that R&R their hood struts get very good at doing it, they only last about 6 months.

With your location, I'm surprised that they last that long Seriously, I've really noticed how the average ambient temperature affects these things. When I was in CO, I was lucky to get 1~1.5 years (even when using the slightly stronger, and maybe fresher, NAPA substitute). Now that we've moved to Hades (TX), I'm on ~5 years. Noticed that they were getting a little marginal last winter, but fine now so don't expect to replace until next winter.

Thanks for your help, I used it when I replaced mine (with NAPA) and it went like a charm.

 

Steve is right. Many do have an access panel on the driver's side (US). My 86 does not.
