i have doubts that my US version 1990 testarossa can make it to 180 mph. i know, i know, there's only one way to be sure :) but i'm not going to try that...for now. :) i'm just wondering if the gearing on this car is shorter than euro versions. here is my speed at a fixed 3K rpm in each gear:

    1st - ~24mph
    2nd - ~38mph
    3rd - ~49mph
    4th - ~60mph
    5th - ~80mph

do others around here have similar results? my guess it will top out at around 170 given these very unscientific observations.

    If you take your unscientific speed and rpm, and extrapolate it with my unscientific and likely faulty math;
80 mph divided by 3000 rpm = .0266666 mph per single rpm.
    .0266666 multiplied by 7000rpm = 186.6662 mph.

Whether the engine has enough beans to all the way to 7 grand in 5th gear is another story.

Give it a try, take pictures along the way, and post the results! :D

Sorry to say but no north american spec testrossa hits 180 mph. They top out at 176 mph or so. 512 tr's will pass the 180 mark, or the early euro spec testarossa (183mph). I haven't looked into the gear ratios, but the cars here are at least 300-400 lbs heavier and down on power.

At least some of the US TR are not geared as tall as the euro TR, but really who's who in the documentation could be messed up. The difference is in the transfer case gear ratios (3.4% taller) and to a lesser extent the tire sizes (maybe 1%) -- everything inside the gearbox is the same. What the OMs show are:

early euro TR transfer gears = 27 tooth drive gear, 29 tooth driven gear

early US = same 27:29 (but these are the kind of specs that don't always get updated correctly in the different version OMs IME )

    late euro = 27:29

    late US = 27:30

Frankly, my TR doesn't need any more top end ;)

thanks for all the responses. i guess it gets pretty close, and that's good enough for me. now if i could just ditch the extra US weight, that would be like gaining 30 hp...

I had my 1987 TR on a track which is essentially a long drag strip with a road course added on. top speed was about 280 km/h or 170 mph +/-. I had not thought of checking the gearing, as i thought all TR were the same, but I have the feeling it has the longer gearing. I have removed the original precats cats and muffler and run essentially straight pipes. Also removed the air intake behind the filter. Car was running 50/50 shell Gold Vmax and racing fuel. Bystanders stated that it smelled a bit rich. tyres were overinflated to 36 front 42 rear(cold) . LOts of fun, although I was a bit busy trying to slow it down. As far as i am concerned it s not how fast will it go its " how quickly is it going to stop"

Just curious, someone mentioned to me that they removed the muffler and ran straight test pipes. Is this ok? If I can get a test pipe and not spend 3k for a capristo and get the same results, why would anybody buy an after market exhaust if the test pipes do the same and at less cost? Am I missing something here?

A lot of what you can do with your exhaust will depend on the attitude of the law enforcement agencies towards noise and pollution. If you have to go through emission checks every year it may be tedious to replace and then remove the cats every year. Getting rid of the mufflers or replacing them with straight through mufflers WILL disturb the peace and quiet of your VA neighbourhood. The police here seem to drive with the windows closed all the time and either the AC or the heater on, and are not too sensitive to noise.

You're putting too many qualities into calling them "the same". If you want to stay respectable emissions-wise by keeping the cats in place, the strategy is to lessen the attenuation from the silencer (ergo, Tubi and his friend's products exist) -- and this is taking the idea way too far ;):

I am not concerned about emissions (I have a euro, get the picture), I was just curious if the same or similar results can be acheived with a test pipe vs. an after market exhuast (i.e., a lot less expensive option).

If you ran Steve M's tips on your existing non cat system , that car would really bark! Who needs a stereo?
