Having just returned my Testa engine back into the car I added fluids.

Just seen that my oil tank is at least 1/2 full of oil. Is this correct?
I always thought that the oil drained down into the engine somewhere.

Please let me know if this is normal or not and if not, what is the reason.

    Thanks

Greetings Phil, hope all is well. There is a drain plug under that tank. . Drain the oil out of there as well. Drain from plugs under engine as well. Then re-fill..

If your filling the engine and see that the oil is going nowhere, once your start her up the oil will go to the engine via the sump pump system.. Not sure where your at..

Mine usually takes about 8.5 qts before level is high on dipstick. Run for a few min or short drive. Then room in tank for remaining 1.5 qts.

Phil the Testa is a dry sump engine. The sump is in fact the tank that you fill, they do this for various reasons including surge protection for G forces and also design problems like keeping the engine profile low. Some oil does end up in the block and that is why we check the quantity immediately after shutdown. Ensure the tank and engine are drained, new filter and top up the tank with 11.5lts of your finest. Good luck with the start up!

Testamon makes a good point about surge and the reserve being needed for dynamics: my oil level was a bit low (as measured hot, right after shutdown) and my low-oil pressure light came on when I was exiting the highway. The off-ramp was sloped downwards.

I was worried that something was wrong with the engine or that at least I would need to change the oil-pressure sensor, which is alomost impossible with the engine in the car (I would have measured it first). Topping off the oil to exactly the right level fixed it.

Hi Robbie, I am at the very nervous 4 or 5 seconds before this event with key in hand.

My guess was the the oil has not filled the radiator yet

    Thanks

your fine.. I hope you filled your oil filter with oil before you replaced it.. As soon as it cranks over the oil with drop thru the system. Then add to fill level on stick.. You can measure the oil level while car is running.. Just becareful that you dont get your hands or clothing stuck in any moving parts.. that is basically the reason why ferrari advises to shut down the immediately check the oil level.. They are probably laughing their asses off..

Phil, I just read your original post again and apologise for the direction my response took. The question I think you wanted answering is -should all the oil drain from the tank and engine with the engine plug undone? Answer No. How did the start up go?

I am just waiting on a donut gasket to fit between the header and Tubi before I start her up.

    Otherwise all looking good :)
However, if I run out of patience I will start her up with an exhaust leak anyway as I want to know that she will start and run okay.

After a few moments hesitation followed by hunting the red head settled down to a nice 1,000 RPM. Oil topped off and coolant filled after purging. :)

Go read my latest thread on lessons learnt :D

Its sticky tape from now on for me even after a lifetime of blocking inlets with tissue paper. .............................
