Hey all: I am considering the purchase of a Testarossa in the 1987-92 range, but feel free to speak to the whole range. At this time, are there any parts you are finding hard to get? Any they are running out of? I see the discussion about tires, but it seems the end result of that discussion is they are in fact available, but what about the rest of the car? Thanks in advance! Wes
Tyres ..... thats the least "problem"..... LOTS of parts are very hard to find, on all F's of course, but also the Testarossa family. And that means ... hard to find and hard to pay.. But if you pay enough, you still can get (or have remake) most parts ... nothing is no more available yet ... There are far more problems in maintainace if you are looking for "risks'... But driving an F is the ultimate pleasure AND risk ... or ist it not ? At least it is for me ... Image Unavailable, Please Login
Back on topic... parts should not be a problem, even tires. However, these cars are somewhat expensive to maintain. Plan on an engine out maitenace every 5 years. Just be prepared for what you are getting into. btw.... worth every bit!!!! I got my TR a couple of years back and LOVE IT. I fell in love with the TR way back in 1984/5 when I saw one. I said some day I would have one. My dream did come through. I say go for it....
Buy the car!! You won't regret it!!! Makes you all tingly inside. My TR is the wallpaper on my cell phone. Love to look at it each and every day.
Just consider that they made just under 7200 of them, EVER. There is a TR being parted out somewhere in the world everyday. Timing is everything. It could be worse, you could buy a Maserati Ghibli of which they only made 1149
I think a TR in general is a well built, durable car.If you find the nicest example you can get, you wont need any parts. I bucked up and paid top dollar for a really nice complete totally functioning car, did some scheduled maintenance 3 yrs ago when I purchased it, and have been doing nothing but driving and polishing. Im lovin it
Go for it. You will always find a way to "fix" things if it goes bad. (sell the dog, sell the GF, etc) Smiles. These cars are an absolute dream to drive. You will never regret owning one. Enjoy!
Why would anyone want to do that? that makes all sad inside! But it does make the rest go up in value!!! Goody for those who bought wisely!!! ME!!!
Fuse panels are very hard to come by. But thanks to Scuderia Rampante Innovations and its proprietor Dave Helms there is a fix for that. As others have said the TR is a solid car if you get a good example. Buy the best that you can find and enjoy every mile. CC
Some of them catch on fire because the fuel and vent lines in the engine bay haven't been changed for 20+ years and crack open. But thanks to Scuderia Rampante Innovations and its proprietor Dave Helms there is a fix for that. Others get crashed. Some TR's are victims of owners that use cars like appliances.
Mine has a fire ex inside, in fact, I have fire exs in all my vehicles... safety first. No treating my TR like an appliance. I do not kiss my appliance washing machine every day like I do my Dino and TR. ) Also.. no crashing. That would be a real bummer. Cheers
You mean my Testarossa isn't capable of making a decent "Grilled Cheese Sandwich"???!!......OHHHHH....The Humanity!!!....Mark
I feel the same way. To me, it appeared to be Ferrari's answer to the Countach, and a GOOD answer it was! One of the few Ferrari's I fell in love with from Day 1. I think if there ever was a Ferrari to keep forever, this is a good candidate. What are you hearing of the ranges to do the complete? I am thinking (if you're lucky) as low as $6000 to $10,000.00 + ? Sound right? Thanks! Wes
The reason I ask about part supply is that when I owned my 328 I learned that the stalk that controls the lights etc., well that little plastic end that "does it all" is no longer available. I thought "Well now what?", but we were able to fix it up, but the thought of having to scrounge around for parts makes me a bit nervous, but I feel you have answered those concerns very well for me, thank you. I really have to sit in one some day. I found the seating position of my 328 uncomfortable. I think it was not only the skinny seats (and I am thin!) but the feet over to one side, perhaps that was what made me feel like I was in a pair of bent leg casts. When I sold that car I sighed a sigh of relief. How would you compare the driving position between a TR and 328? Wes
I have owned my '87 TR for 11 years, and never had any problems finding parts. One of the best sources, I have found, is Algar in Philadelphia. I have never had problems with the TR. I preemptively maintain it, and it performs perfectly. Just make sure to spend the time finding a great car, lovingly maintained by a fanatic, and have it inspected, and you will be fine. Best of luck! Image Unavailable, Please Login
Feet still over to the side, built for a person with long arms and short legs. A little hard getting in with the wide door sills (if dont want to scuff the crap out of seat bolsters. Tough to find one without seat bolster wear, because most dont take any care when getting in & out or they are out of shape and cant help it. If you are over 6 foot depending on how you like your seat back adjusted, your head may hit the cieling. Once in and the engine starts, all that stuff doesnt matter anymore
I wholeheartedly agree on Algar. They have a massive inventory of parts. As for parts availability, I haven't run into anything major yet, but little things like trunk latches and cables are NLA, which is a bit of a PITA. FWIW, the Testarossa is the ultimate Ferrari production car IMHO. Ferrari absolutely nailed it in every way in designing this car. Buy the best one you can afford...you will not regret it.
STOP IT! You guys publishing pics of wonderful garages makes me cry. I wish I had my Ferraris in such beautifuly stables as yours.
I have had my 88 TR for ~ 3 years now and agree with everything that everybody has said. The TR is the ultimate. I sat in a Countach the other day and still like my TR better. And sometimes I do get a bit jealous of the newer Ferraris that you can drive from Michigan to California and back without any worry, but the TR is still the icon. And I drove all summer this year without any problem. Pooh-Baugh is right, you people have to stop publishing pictures of your super garages. Mine is a mess (but I still call it home): Image Unavailable, Please Login
+1000. It is far better engineered than I ever expected - and mine is an early 86 actually built in 85. A couple of things more than scheduled maintenance now, but no more than any other 25-year-old car.
+100. It is exceptionally well built and engineered...shockingly so. I equate it more to a 1980's Mercedes than a Ferrari. Fantastically engineered and feels invincible.
You said: "I am considering the purchase of a Testarossa in the 1987-92 range ...." Go for one of the years 1992-1994 ... the restiled and enhanced version: the 512TR ! Little bit more expensive but really far more value for money imo (breakes. interior etc.).
NONSENSE--- GO FOR THE O.G. There is only one Testarossa.... and it has centerlock wheels and a single mirror Image Unavailable, Please Login
