    Gents,

I had searched on here and had some conversations behind the scenes when I was looking into replacing my rack and tried to find out the best way of getting a working lasting rack in my car. I was eventually convinced a second hand rack was not an option and that as I was intending on having the car for a long time and to drive it I needed a lasting rebuild. A new rack wasn't an option either.

As I couldn't find all of the information in one dedicated thread and no where could I find pictures of what other people had done for just the rack tear down and build I decided to list all my info out here with pics and what has been done.

My car is a 1991 Euro. Low mileage very good condition. But I had the noise from the right hand side of the rack that some cars develop. On inspection it was confirmed the plastic/nylon bush was no more......vanished into the ether.

To get the rack out is a bit of a pain but once you get it out you will see its pretty straight forward.

We opted for the bronze bushing to be machined as pictured but instead of doing a taper and faffing around with ventilation we opted for a more robust pressed in method. But this is where you need to take care. The body of the rack is very thin. In our case we heated up the rack and dropped in a chilled bush.

We left the opposite side of the rack to provide the ventilation as its fully supported by the pinion.

I will post more pictures shortly of the rack back together and going back into the car.

I owe big thanks to the Gulf FG1000 engineers for doing this for me.
