I am considering removing my stock muffler and trying out straight pipes. Does anyone know where I can buy these or who makes/made them?
I don't want to spend a fortune, because I'd just buy a Capristo in that case.
Has anyone ever had a set of straight pipes made? Cost? Issues? Sound? Thoughts?
    Thanks in advance

I had straight pipes on my Diablo 5.7 out of Japan when I got it.

There are probably active war zones in the world where that level of sound would attract disapproval.

Sounds great! Way too loud for normal use and you will need hearing protection inside the car.

You need to describe the rest of your exhaust system configuration:
Precats + cats + straight pipes = maybe
No precats + cats + straight pipes = probably not
No precats + no cats + straight pipes = no way

At one time I had hollowed out precats, no cats, and the factory muffler...and it sounded decent but was still pretty quiet.

My config is the 3rd you mentioned; no pre-cats and no cats, which would put straight pipes in your 'no way' category. The pre-cat and cat deletes were not for sound but just to reduce the risk of damage from any possible cat disintegration in the future.

If straight pipes are likely too loud and the stock muffler sounds a bit sedate as Carguy mentioned, what would you guys use? Am I at a 'Capristo or nothing' stage or are there other options you guys can suggest?

    IME:

    1. "Stock precats + stock cats + stock muffler" = sounds like sewing machine ;) except at high RPM.
    2. "No precats + Hyperflow cats + Tubi" = too loud so went to
    3. "No precats + more standard Mustang 5.0 cats + Tubi" = still pretty loud.

Getting rid of the precats makes sense to me (don't like them being so "underneath" the powerplant and are really only present to reduce the cold start-up emissions to meet the US specs of the day), but not the cats so much -- JMO.

My Euro 91 has standard headers (no pre cats), test pipes and a Capistro muffler. Sounds fantastic inside and outside the car. No complaints.

I had a one off straight thru Larini exhaust on my Testarossa. Just headers and then the pipes. It was SERIOUSLY loud, close to 128db. When Henry Catchpole drove it for Evo Magazine he said it was the loudest road car he had every driven. I still have it, but not the car!

When I was changing over my exhaust, I took it for a ride with just pre-cats only! Wicked loud, and a lot of over run backfires.

Walter, as you are aware I installed a Capristo level 3 with Tubi test pipes and Tubi precats.
Car is LOUD!! To a point that I’ve thought about installing hyper flow cats but because they don’t make them anymore I will keep it as it is because it sounds really good.
I don’t think you will like straight pipes on your car if you don’t have anything on it. Capristo, Tubi, Kreissieg, Ansa have a design to create a nice note and straight piping it would not sound good at all. It will sound loud yes but without harmonics.
My Ansa exhaust will not disappoint you I can assure you that, especially as you already removed all cats.
Otherwise you can do what I did and install $9k worth of components and have a magical noise.

When you remove the crossover of a TR exhaust it will sound like two raw six cylinders rather than one unique 12. The stock muffler does have a crossover... it is just really muffled.

Good call-out Jeff. I hadn't looked closely enough at the video posted by Veedub00, as admittedly the sound grabbed my attention. Btw, thanks James/Veedub00 - super useful info in that video for me to digest. That TR just has 2 short exhaust tubes and not the cross-over style sold for many rear engined cars. I think a cross-over exhaust with no muffler may sound different (?) than just the 2 independent straight pipes.

After reading the posts on this thread I think I'll look for something a little less aggressive.

As always, you guys are invaluable. Thanks heaps.

Yes and cold start is SOOO loud, I used to let my car warm up before leaving my house for 10 mins now I have to leave right away and warm it up slowly elsewhere or the neighbors will start complaining. Once the cars warms up the car sounds better but at cold start is deafening. And Capristo is not straight piped, even that video posted sounds too loud and videos are never like real life.
