Looking at upgrading the audio system on an 87 TR with some MB's. Does anyone know if there is a way to change the tweeters without removing the dash? Has anyone ever attempted this upgrade? Thanks for any and all pics, advice and help on this project.

Greetings.. just went thru this. You must remove the dash to remove the tweeters. So much of a pain in the but that I opted to leave the existing tweeters intact. I placed my new tweeters on the lower speaker panels and they sound great. Your sitting so low in the car that its almost at your level down there. Key word being almost. The ideal spot would be were they are now. They are good tweeters - you can juice them up with some fresh amp power and I bet they would sound good. Hope this info helps

I might be dreaming, but I replaced my tweeters without taking out the dash.

Nope, No knee bar. Very interesting, I never knew that was standard equipment on some TR's. Probably US models?
That explains why I could get my tweeters out easily.

So what you are saying is the tweeters can be changed without removing the dash, just the knee protection?

Just went through this a couple of weeks ago. I thought I had to remove the dash, which I tried to do. It was a f***ing pain in the a**. It took forever and never really got it done completely. So after some frustration, I was staring at the new tweeter, and it finally dawned on me. The new tweeter sits inside a little plastic piece, like a cup. I figured the old one must work in the same way. So, I started playing around with the tweeter. I discovered that if you press in and turn (like a child proof medince bottle) the speaker part of the tweeter comes out and then there's a screw in the holder and the whole thing comes apart. Unfortunately, my new tweeters were too small for the opening, so i had to use the old ones which were still O.K. and just replaced the woofers of the component set. Needless to say, I was pissed that I spent a few useless hours doing something that would have taken me 10 minutes if I had only known. And, i never even put the new ones in. Hopefully this insight spares you some time also.

I had to pull my dash out to do mine. I used the factory mounts and modified them to take a new MB Quart 19mm titanium tweeter.

I reckon you could do the pass side if the wife helps and has really small hands but forget about the drivers side.

Report on my stereo install is here about a 1/4 of the way down the page:

Yes, my 87 TR has the Knee Protection Bar so it sounds like removing the dash is more of a hassle than it maybe worth? I will try some of those other ideas on removing the tweeter and see what I find out. Thanks for your help! On a side note, does anyone know where I can find the small plastic mounting bracket for the passenger side sun visor on a TR? The one next to the door that mounts in the ceiling? Thanks alot and have a great day!

I recently designed a new grill that is a OEM replica (Same size, shape and look) The only difference is it screws into itself. The old ones are dry rotted and break easily. You can mount a 1" tweeter with ease. Happy to help if anyone needs a pair. You can easily install without removing the dash.
