We all know testing was banned. Costs and blah blah. The Fia is worried about costs for the smaller teams who are dwindling at the back. The Fiat should allow them to test all they want (or close to it) but limit the top teams testing and base it on a sliding scale providing different time allotments for different teams.

Allow for no testing or very little for a top team like Red Bull. Afford hours per week for other teams to test. Say 8 hours for Mclaren, 12 hours for MB/Ferrari, 16 hours and so on until you come to the bottom two or three teams and offer them unlimited testing or a substantial number of hours.

The order of who gets what allotment of hours can change throughout the course of the year as other teams eclipse position in terms of speed etc. This can possibly be determined via the outcome of the latest race times averaged with the outcomes of the first few races of the season or something.

Lastly, testing such as this will not be a year-round possibility. Testing can start after the 3rd or 4th race and must end prior to the 3rd to last race.

Something like this could be a good compromise to what we have now, which is nothing vs something. The current state of F1 aerodynamics technology seems to be stagnating in a pool of wind tunnel testing and conjeture which is even more unfair for teams who do not have unlimited access to an excellent wind tunnel facility. The only real issue I see regarding this is tire allotment and if Pirelli would be onboard to supplying more tires.

    An interesting take on the situation. I guess I could argue it both ways;

    - It's an attempt at leveling the playing field for the minnows.
    Or
    - It's an attempt at tilting the playing field away from the big boys.

    :)

For all of it's BS, one area where F1 remains is the "same for all" - Don't like the heat, don't enter. Don't like the lack of testing? Race somewhere else..... etc.

Now, why they don't test on the Monday after (most) races is completely beyond me - I was really hoping JT may have said something about this craziness - He was a team principal after all - Surely he, of all people, know they've gotta test?.......

    Cheers,
    Ian

I have always thought Friday was a perfect day for open testing. Allow a third car even...

It could be a very simple rule. Any team that has not scored points in the last four rounds can test as much as they want between rounds.

It would help teams struggling with reliability to improve the robust design of the car.

The newer teams would be helped to get up to speed, and probably encourage additional demand for new teams as they can expect to test for the first year as much as they want, at least until they finish in the top 10.

As it sits now it is a barrier to entry that dissuades creation of a new team.

    Allow the T-Car.

T-Car is allowed to run on Friday with a "junior driver", someone in GP2, F3000 or similar feeder program.

T-Car gets free tires on Friday, of the same specification that will be used in the GP.

Schedule test sessions for the Monday after the Grands Prix at Istanbul, Catalunya, Silverstone, Nurburgring, Spa and Monza.

T-Car only may run Monday test. 30% of laps run must be with "junior driver".

T-Car gets free tires on Monday, in a specification open to Pirelli's choosing.

I think it was Ian, who came up with a brilliant idea of allowing teams to test on Monday, at the current track where they raced on Sunday. That way, there's no extra cost in terms of travelling (since they're already in the track), and teams should also be allowed to run a third driver on a regular basis to get used to the car, and in case an emergency arises (Massa 2009).

Having said that, i really think testing is a must. Oh yea, it should be free for the fans too :)

The entire testing ban is completely absurd. It is the dumbest thing going in what is supposed to be the pinnacle of motorsport. Anything that eats at the ban I'm in favor of. Monday testing, Friday testing, inverse standing allowances, all of it, any testing would be an improvement.

Ask the back markers if they would prefer to have testing vs not (to save $), and I'm willing to bet a steak dinner that they would all say yes. Being outside the 107% limit, dropping out after 3 laps, and such which is the result of no testing, is more expensive in lost sponsorship money (who wants to sponsor a team that can't even be in the friggin race??) than spending money for testing so they can be within the 107% limit, or run more than 3 laps.

These bozos just can't see the forrest for the trees.

Yep, I have always thought third car/driver testing on Fridays was the way to go, like they had in 2004. The costs of running a 3rd car are minimal, considering that the teams ship more then enough parts too each track anyway to build at least 2 spare cars anyway. And i also think its the best way to bring on young talent.

But if mid-season test days were to come back, i have always thought that copying the Moto Gp way of doing them on the Monday after the races was the best solution.
