So I finally played poker last night. It was my first time playing TH'E. It was a casual get-together at a friend's house and the buy-in was $5. On the hand where I was about to go out - the pot had all of my chips - I ended up winning and I eventually came back strong (very strong). At one point, I had well over $50 in chips.

We started playing around 11 and by 2:30 it was time to go home. By that time, I was bluffing every hand, just to get rid of my chips so I could leave. I ended up giving my chips to another player. I had a lot of fun. I know some people here play very seriously; I was surprised at how easy it was to learn - the learning curve afforded me the opportunity to pick things up quickly enough to avoid a second buy-in. There's still much more I could learn, but it was fun and easy enough to play and enjoy the first time around.

Carb, TH'E has to be my favorite game. The basic rules are easily learned, but all of the subtle nuances make it impossible to master. I used to have a regular game with friends and really miss it. Playing online can be fun, but it's not nearly as enjoyable for me as sitting at a table with other players face-to-face.

I really like Texas Holdem. I just kind of started playing when we got this poker set from a friend. It has the table cloth thing, casino like chips with the values and cool designs on them..its pretty awsome./

hold 'em is awesome, i started playing about 3 years ago, right as it started taking off. i find it relaxing to sit back and watch it on tv, or play it with friends. i always play for amounts that i can afford, and if i lose will be able to look back and laugh about it, im not betting 50,000 for a heads up game. ne1 up for a game? ;)

One of my friends played it every night, all night, and slept during his classes, by the end of the year he was down a few hundred $ and had terrible grades. Enjoy it but don't get too hooked!

Rules are easy, the learning curve on the subtilties are steep.

Kinda funny, in the 80's I was fascinated with HE, but nobody wanted to play it in my regular game. It was wildcard everything. Now it's all everyone wants to play. Go figure. That and Omaha hi-lo.

as is often said of poker [and other things] 'a few minutes to learn, a lifetime to master'

i play both online and in the card rooms here in CA pretty religiously -- i didnt get to make it to any of the WSOP events this year but i'm planning on playing in a couple of the low [$1000-1500] buy in events in '07.

I nearly made it to one of the mansionpoker's pokerdome episodes through the freerolls -- i came in 1st of 2000 in one of the freerolls for the qualifier, and then 12th of about 350-400 in the qualifier to go to TV. :D

Carbie - be sure to try your hand at Omaha, to see if your temperament and strategy may offer you the upper hand. Hold 'ems a blast, miss the LA Crew I played with for umpteen years.

Haha, my roommate in college did the same thing except he is now kicked out of school and living off his parents..you know since companies aren't too keen on hirering someone who has no work experience and was thrown out of school for getting below a 1.0 three semesters in a row.

I've got myself in a stupid position here. After a recent GP, the gang decided to play poker, as they had an expert Yank (that would be me) to help them out. So we play dime ante, 50 cent limit poker, and they are so enamored that they want to play every week, and of course I have to be there. It's good fun and all, but playing poker with people who still need to consult the list to see if a straight beats three of a kind isn't much of a challenge. Which is where I made my big mistake. One deal, out of boredom, I called seven card no-peek, card after the last queen wild. Silly game, and now it's like their favorite. Me, I prefer five card draw nothing wild, but that gets played only when it's my deal....

    *sigh*
