60 years later, and his impact is still felt all around the world, not just in sports. he was the right guy at the right time, and a great player to boot. the game would not be the same without him, in more ways than one. nothing brings people together like baseball, and because of him, this took on a whole new meaning.
thank you very much number 42, r.i.p.

I'm watching the Spurs/Mavericks game and they said Stackhouse wanted to have Robinson on the back of his jersey for the game. The NBA declined. He has it written on his shoes though.

In his honor, his Number - 42 - is retired from MLB for all teams. Today and today only, some players will be able to wear that number for a day.

A lot of folks don't know he was actually ahead of Rosa Parks by more than a decade - he wouldn't go to the back of the bus (segregation, nothing more, nothing less) when he was in the Army, even when ordered to do so by a ranking officer. Subject to Court-martial, he was found innocent of insubordination and honorably discharged.

    Rest In Peace, Sir.

the thing that i find upsetting is the sacrifice and work that great men and women did to defeat segregation and discrimination only to have the present generation act like they do now. i'd like to think that for every rapping thug and nitwit with his drawers around his knees there are a few hardworking families honoring the example of those that gave so much for the betterment of mankind.

i heard a lot of people say that not everyone should have been able to wear his number yesterday, but i totally disagree with that. because if we don't do something to honor him, for all i know when i take my kid to his first cards game, he could easily point to number 42 on the retired numbers and ask who that was, which would be a travesty in itself. he should be remembered and celebrated, his name belongs up there with ruth, mantle, musial, young, and all of the other greats.
