Chicago's Motosport TV is having their annual report from the Rock near the Science & Industry museum in Chicago on Thanksgiving morning. Anybody planning on going there?

I'm gonna be there with my 308.

    Who else?

Couple of things: At the rock the first car race in the USA was held in the 19th century. The race led to Evanston and back and was held on Thanksgiving, hence the tradition. Only few of the contestants made it and it took them several hours.

Bill Wild has an annual TV special about this and everybody who comes to the Rock ends up in his show. So normally this is a nice meet for car enthusiasts. Last year my car was the only Ferrari and he was quite happy to see it.

Parking? Well, it is on the West Side of the Science & Industry museum in the park, you don' need parking, you drive your car up on the grass and in front of his TV camera. Bill is btw a big Merc fan, so he would probably have a heart attack if he'd see your cool silver arrow.

I don't expect many folks from on here. Frank brought it up and I'll be there so I'm thinking we could head out to a breakfast thereafter. Heck, if you like you could come over to my digs and challenge me on my sim (race or space, you pick).

Andreas, what time does all this take place? I just learned that we will be going to Hyde Park on Thanksgiving for dinner at my wife's aunt's. And, I think (knock wood) that I have fixed what was wrong with the Biturbo, so I'll probably be driving it that day.

Starts pretty early somewhere between 8am and 9am. Lasts till about 11am. The earlier you get there, the shorter the wait until it's your turn in front of the camera.

Last year I was driving around the Southside shortly after 7am to find the place. As it turned out I was the 2nd to show up.

Great! I'm thinking about 8am. And it won't be with the 308 which is currently under house arrest.

I'd like to go to this but I will be entertaining a guest from out of state. To be honest, I don't think I can get up in the morning and out to the city from the burbs in the best time nor condition. I will look for you guys on TV later I guess.

Tod is probably on the same day, the Rock normally takes a couple of months before the special airs.

    Hey everyone,

Just wanted to say I give you all an early wish for a well Thanksgiving. I am personally thankful to have my health and to be able to be a part of lives of the people I care about and now all the new people I meet through this Fchat and the FOC. I hope everyone has their healthy share of Tom Turkey and can burn off the left overs with no problems.

Wishing all my Fchatters the best, stay warm...

If it's clear when I get up tomorrow, I'll try to make it, as long as there's not lots of salt on the streets. (This crappy weather is supposed to move out of here this evening, and tomorrow is supposed to be clear, although cold.)

Ah shucks, I decided not to go. At 24F it is simply a bit too cold in a convertible without heat and a leaking roof. Gotta fix that and try again next year.

Chuck, if you end up on the show, let me know please. Take some pics pls.

I did go. It was pretty cool, but, apparently they've had trouble with the City and they were not allowed to park on the grass by the Rock itself, so the cars had to park on the side street next to the park. And, given the weather turnout was (apparently) lighter than in the past, but a few other intrepid souls came down in their convertibles--an Austin Healy and a couple of MGs. Alas, the joke which may make it onto the show was, "These guys with the British cars come with the tops down to prove how tough they are; with an Italian car, I'm assuming you came with the top down because it doesn't work." Ha frickin' ha.

I did learn that apparently I have the same name as one of the umpires from The Race, and he wrote a book about it, which I'm going to try to track down.

Now I just hope I can get the salt rinsed off my car before it dissolves into a heap of reddish dust. But, it should be a little warmer today, so here's hoping.

I had not quite realized the extent to which this very historic event in Chicago history and automotive history is officially ignored by the local government. You'd think they would do whatever they can to drum up tourism, but here they are with an undisputed historical First right here in Chicago, and they do nothing about it. Even The Rock was placed by a group of private citizens, who had to really push to be allowed to place it there at all. Scandalous, and incomprehensible.

Chuck, I'm glad to hear you went there and I so agree with your comments. It is puzzling to me, that such a historic event is so totally ignored. People make big deals out of Daytona, Indianapolis, the Glen, Laguna Seca, whereas the real automotive history has its roots right here. This event is the Lindbergh Atlantic crossing of autoracing in the USA, yet nobody knows about it.

Track that book down, please. I'd be delighted to see it as well and now it belongs into your car library.

Next year I'm certain to be there again. Unfortunately this week two out of two cars were down. I hope it will be the opposite next year.

As a consolation I noticed on Thanksgiving morning, that even if my 308 had been able to run, I couldn't have left the garage: Ice all the way on the ramp.

Those MG Guys go every Year, with their tops down,no matter what.

It's a real shame that they hassle Bill Wildt about going on the grass by there now. He's been going there for a dozen or so Years, every Year, with No Problem. Then, all of a sudden, last Year, some whiney crybaby complained, and now he gets hassled for doing the City a promotional favor. On a Holiday,no matter how Cold it is. NOBODY else would do that! What a Bunch of B.S.,I tell ya....:(

Andreas, sorry you didn't make it. If I had had a little more leisure to plan things this weekend I could have given you a ride.

Initially I was not going to go if there was salt on the roads, but Thursday morning was so beautiful, especially after Wednesday afternoon and night, that I succumbed to the lure of the open road and went anyway. Saturday morning I took the car to a car wash and ran the high-pressure rinse all around the car, up inside the wheel wells, and underneath as well as I could, without getting down on the ground of the cold wet wash bay. Hopefully I got the salt off. I have always heard that salt rinses right off, and once it rains the roads are OK again, for instance. It seems that the big problem with salt corrosion comes from everyday winter driving, when the car gets a constant spray of brine from the roads and it doesn't get rinsed off for days or weeks or months. At least, I hope that's the case!!!

I think your assumptions are correct. Also if that is any comfort: They didn't use any salt trucks in the city so far. So any salt you would have gotten, would have to come from the suburbian streets.
