Been trying to find out info on the 12 2wd 96 diablos and couldn't find any answers so I thought I would ask here. Lamborghini started mfg sv's in 95 (per lambocars.com) but in 96 they produced 12 rwd vt's? Why would they do this? Are these just regular vt's with no viscuous coupling and no front driveshafts. My impression was that the sv's were lower in spec than vt's. Is this one of the 2wd vt's? http://www.symbolicmotors.com/car-9/1996-lamborghini-diablo.html Appreciate any answers anyone may have. Thanks--Dave--

I know very little about the 2wd 96 cars. Quite a few enthusiasts, do not even know they exist. I do know their is a small 96 spec Lamborghini service manual (authorized L dealers), for just this particular car. It is probably an addendum to the 2wd 91-93 manual, and or the 94-95 VT.

I think Symbolic in San Diego has a Blue one. Give them a call, they might have some info.

The car at symbolic APPEARS to be one of the 12 rwd '96 cars, but it is hard to tell just by those pix. And these 12 cars are not VTs (VT denotes a car as the all-wheel drive version). I have only seen three of these cars in person, including TomF-1's very nice example. I'll try to get pics up when I have some time of the other two I took photos of. Very light and very fast Diablos. These 2wd cars are lot of fun to drive, especially after driving VTs, which stick to the pavement like glue.

The 2 rwd is so fun to drive it's much lighter than the VT I had a 96' and now I have a 95' both are 2 rwd.

I guess they were ordered like this.

    Michael,

Just checking in. I am in Mexico for vacation w/ the children. Thank you for your kind words.....You are a tremendous asset to the community and to Lambo of Chicago.

Btw, the one at Symbolic has 44k but the odometer is currently showing less than 2k.....Not sure the impetus for a new Odometer but FWIW, they are up front about the disclosure.

I heard back from Symbolic today. The 96 they have is a 2wd model with a full repaint by previous owner, engine rebuilt with clutch. No mention of the mileage even though I asked about it. They say they have all receipts. For myself I think I would be more interested in Tom's car. I won't bother him on vacation, will wait till he's back.

    Same reply as *********:

SV production began in late '95 as '96 Model Year cars. First USA-spec SV from the factory was '98MY. The 97SV can be legally imported (to USA) as long as it is modified to meet EPA/DOT requirements.

The RWD 96 Diablos for the USA were to offer a (slightly) lower priced Diablo to the USA market. Remember, back in those days you had a huge luxury tax (10K +) on the Diablos that ALUSA (automobili Lamborghini USA - distributor at the time) rebated to help move inventory. Sales were quite weak, 1994 model year Diablos (VTs and SE30s) were still available a plenty in calendar year 1996. I should know, I bought one of each in 1996. :)

One more thing (not posted on *********):

The 96 RWD Diablos are not SVs, they are not lightweight. The SVs, for instance, had a lot less leather and no adjustable shocks, no front end lift, etc. The RWD Diablos were optioned just like VTs but without the viscous traction. So, you got full leather interior, air con, no over-the-roof air scoops, etc.
