ok, now, as you know, if your gas cap isn't tight, u got a cel. well known fact. also a well known fact is that the inner rubber of the cap is prone to be detached , presumably because of heat, see pic. mine was detached so I am going to use some glue to put them back. however, the problem I have is that, on both sides of the rubber, there are breather holes that was supposed to breath air I assume, not sure. I have a spare gas cap bought from eurospare , the metal part has some holes in there, see pic, as commensurate with the rubber inside. What about the factory original ? It has no holes, why does the rubber has holes then? What purpose does the holes in the rubber serve? I don’t really know the answer to why the OEM rubber seal has holes, but the gas cap is supposed to effect a closed system. It’s not supposed to breathe to the atmosphere with holes. The gas vapors that might otherwise vent through a cap with holes gets absorbed by the emissions system and purged when the engine is running. This is why a loose gas cap triggers a CEL; the system senses that it’s no longer a closed system and is instead venting raw gas (hydrocarbon) vapors to the atmosphere. Best glue is black 3M 5200. Light coat- put in place -clean if periphery needs it. Tighten down but not too tight. Don't mess with it 4-5 days. Great lasting seal.
I used this and it has been more than a year trouble free Image Unavailable, Please Login Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I used Gorilla glue and its been about 4 years. Use sparingly and follow instructions. Per OP used cap, looks to me that its not a Ferrari cap. Could be a different make/model. Not having the FERRARI imprint is a dead giveaway.
+1, this is what i used except in the grey color. I had it lying around from using it on my Ducatis so that's what I used. To the OP: the original Ferrari gas cap does have breather holes. The original Ferrari gas cap doesn't have holes punched in a hexagonal shape in the gas cap like the used one you got from Eurospares but if you look at where it says "Ferrari" in black on the factory cap, the "F", the second "r" and the "i" have 2 vertical holes punched in, those are the breather holes.
The cap is vented in one direction, vacuum. It’s effectivly a check valve. As fuel is used ambient air is allowed to fill the tank. It doesn’t vent overboard, excessive pressure is routed through the charcoal filter.
Once I filled the car too much (literally all the way up) and I put the cap too tight, the result?? With the vacuum I could not open it when I tried to put gas. I thought I was going to need a tool, after 5 minutes of struggling with the cap (and have “Ferrari” printed on the palm of my hand) I was able to open it.
